This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
Monstrosity/The Atomic Brain would make a great entry into any festival of 'Atomic Horror'. Sure, the budget is zero and the acting is poor... but the plot is pure gonzo and seldom dull. The writing is a notch above what you'd usually expect from such a thing. Mad Dr. Frank and his zoo of brain transplant experiments are being funded by a crazy old lady hoping for second chance at life in a young, attractive body. Her greedy and lecherous boy toy goes shopping for suitable donors. There's already a zombie girl and a dog man roaming the property and soon there's a cat woman as well. Things don't go as planned of course when Dr. Frank realizes just how vicious old Mrs. March is. Great twist ending that leaves things more open-ended than movies like this tend to do. The way this is filmed reminded me a good bit of Night of the Living Dead. With it's make-do sets and lack of glamour. Parts of it could be seen as awkward and unintentionally humorous... but the basic concept is gruesome and the script is lean enough to stay on focus. There's not a lot of filler. I rated it a 10 just to counter some of the ridiculously low votes it's received. But I sincerely feel that it's got a lot going for it compared to other horrors that might look better and have bigger stars but are comparatively vacant on ideas and carry-through.This is definitely going on my re-watch list.
"Hetty March" (Marjorie Eaton) is a wealthy—but extremely old and greedy—woman who uses her money only for her own selfish ways. Realizing that she have only a few years left in life she finances a brilliant—but equally self-absorbed—scientist by the name of "Dr. Otto Frank" (Frank Gerstle) to conduct experiments concerned with the transplanting of a brain from one body to another with the intent of having Miss March's brain transferred to the body of a beautiful, young woman. To that end she hires three young ladies by the names of "Beatrice Mullins" (Judy Bamber), "Nina Rhodes" (Erika Peters) and "Anita Gonzalez" (Lisa Lang) from foreign countries to work as housekeepers at her mansion. At least that is what she tells them. Now rather than reveal any more of this movie and risk spoiling it for those who haven't seen it I will just say that this was a low-budget project which fails to rise above its limitations. Thankfully, it doesn't last that long (only 64 minutes) otherwise it would have been an even bigger waste of time. As a matter of fact, other than the presence of Judy Bamber and Erika Peters there was really nothing worth much interest at all. Accordingly, I rate this movie as below average.
Three foreign girls meet in Los Angeles bus station waiting to be picked up by an employer named March. What's required of them? We don't know. One is Latin, the other is European and thirdly is a slinky blonde from across the pond. They're met by a chauffeur and driven to a mansion in an obscure part of town. Under the employment of a Craggy, elderly, avaricious Hetty March, Hetty has a problem; her body is old and worn down but under the care of Dr. Otto Frank our seniorita has a slim chance at regaining her youth through an operation of brain switching using the three oblivious women. Miss March is immediately taken by Bea (Judy Bamber) blonde, shapely who is British and resembles of Marilyn Monroe. Miss March gives Bea the royal treatment, treating her like fragile China. Bea is given the top floor wing. As for Nina pronounced Nine-a,who by the way is also quite attractive, brunette and just as lovely is designated to polishing the silver while Bea is trying on expensive outfits as elderly Miss March fantasizes being in her place. Lastly is our tragic figure Anita who was dis-robed examined is flawed and not suitable for the the caustic Miss March's wishes. Nina becomes suspicious about her situation as Ms. March makes such a fuss over Bea having her try on exquisite clothes plus the immediate absence of Anita. What is Anita's reward? A dingy room in the cellar. The first eye catching scene besides Judy Bamber's slinky figure is Hans (THE DOG MAN) who stands guard outside the compound and is chained by the ankle. Then there's the strange stark faced woman in white without a care in the world meandering along the grounds like a zombie. She reminds me of Nancy Pelosi; anyway the dog man see's his pray (were assuming a ravenous appetite included,) attacks the mindless woman. Great sound effects as Hans engorges Zombie Girl with the sounds of a ravenous dog preferably a Doberman or Shepard breed. In the end of the brief carnage it was the best supper Hans ever devoured. The two girls witness this and realizes there's no escape. Unbeknownst to Bea and Nina, Anita is abducted into the operating room and awakes with the mind of a cat. Anita has a hefty appetite and eats a rodent whole. Now Miss March has two pets. Hans and Anita! Verbally abused and right hand man-servant Victor (middle-aged,) plans to help the two females escape at the clutches of his Elderly belligerent boss, but two mishaps happen. Anita scratches Bea's eye out and second Miss March stabs Victor. Since Bea's unfortunate and untimely accident, Miss March turns her attentions to Nina who the Narrator describes as "Curvy in the right places." On to the operating room and the transformation of brains. Nina youthful body shared with the elderly Miss March. Things go wrong as Dr. Frank undermines Miss March and switches his former employers brain into another black cat. (No shortages of felines in this movie.) Although the newly transformed Miss March walks on all fours with her brain still intact with payback in mind. The newly transformed March cat walks on all fours and pushes the right buttons and traps the Doctor in a glass case and pushes (with her furry paws,) the power on and kills Dr. Frank. Then crawls on other controls and causes an explosion. The sound startles one eyed Bea as she gets out of bed. Now the Mansion is ablaze and the two girls must get out. Bea take off her head piece with her scared empty socket showing, YUK. Removes Nina straps from the gurney and notices with her remaining eye, Her detached eye is in a glass case. But the case is electrically charged. She touches the case and gets electrocuted. What was she thinking? She's going to take her eye with her and any surgeon would insert it back? Despite this cheesy epic, It had a nice flow and keeps your interest. Other questions come to mind? Who diapers Hans the Dog Man? What kind of cat food does Ms March like? Will Nina claim her prize? Who cares! A laugh a minute in this chick flick bafoonary.
It's hard to say anything useful about this movie. It's just one of those '60's B-horrors that can't even be really regarded as a real movie because it does basically everything wrong. In all honesty, the concept still could had worked out. It would had never made a great movie but at least it showed some potential of a decent and fun genre film. But all of this got simply wasted. The movie very often doesn't even make sense, due to the extremely messy way the story gets told in. It's a good thing that Joseph V. Mascelli never attempted to direct a movie again, after this one. Same goes for most of the cast, who never appeared in a film-role again after this movie. It's a very cheap movie with a real offbeat pace. There is basically too little happening in the movie and when there is something happening you'll have an hard time trying to understand it because it all gets presented so incredibly bad and confusing. Also none of the characters ever work out, due to this. It's funny to see how the girls keep doing their shores, from the first day on, even though they figure out soon that something is terribly wrong in the house. They however never really make any attempts to get out of the situation or try to figure out what mysterious things are happening and why.I could go on about what this movie does wrong but it would simply also suffice to say that the movie simply does nothing right at all.2/10http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/
