Viva Las Vegas
May. 20,1964 NRLucky Jackson arrives in town with his car literally in tow ready for the first Las Vegas Grand Prix - once he has the money to buy an engine. He gets the cash easily enough but mislays it when the pretty swimming pool manageress takes his mind off things. It seems he will lose both race and girl, problems made more difficult by rivalry from Elmo Mancini, fellow racer and womaniser.

Boring
It is not deep, but it is fun to watch. It does have a bit more of an edge to it than other similar films.
There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
The TCM introduction advises this is the most profitable Elvis movie ever made!Elvis is a race car driver and Ann-Margaret is a swim instructor. Every opportunity is given to showcase Elvis singing and Ann-Margaret's legs and dancing savoir faire! An enjoyable movie with great music and dancing! I can't believe it's taken me this long to see it.
Elvis Presley was without doubt a phenomenal singer, but let's face it - most of his movies (especially of this period this particular one was made in) and many of the song he was forced to sing in them were beneath his talents. However, "Viva Las Vegas" ends up being a pleasant Presley vehicle. Presley is pretty enthusiastic here, especially when he gets to dance and sing. And most of the songs in this particular movie he gets to sing are pretty good, my favorite being the title song. But Presley is well matched with his co-star Ann-Margret. She is spunky and always manages to stand up to the magnetic Presley. It also helps that the screenplay writes her character to have a strong personality; it's no surprise that the screenplay was written by a woman. There isn't a heck of a lot of plot here, and what little there is happens to be pretty predictable. But the movie is fast-paced, colorful, not afraid to be a little (pleasantly) silly, and ends up being pretty fun. (By the way, see the movie on Blu-ray - it looks absolutely gorgeous on that format.)
Viva Las Vegas is the quintessential Elvis AND Las Vegas movie! I honestly don't believe you have to be an Elvis fan to enjoy this film. Just go with it! It's a fun, enjoyable flick starring the most beautiful male and female leads to ever grace the screen, some great songs...and Las Vegas. What's not to love!? The film is what Vegas is: Pure fun! Shot entirely on location in Las Vegas in the summer of 1963, it contains some great shots of "classic Vegas" such as Fremont Street and a lot of the now no longer standing Hotels on the Las Vegas strip (the Flamingo where Elvis is staying IS still standing but has been imploded and rebuilt in stages over the last 50 years.) Elvis plays race driver Lucky Jackson who's in town for the Las Vegas Grand Prix. When he casts his eyes on the stunning Rusty Martin (Ann- Margret) he begins a chase all over Vegas with fellow racer the Italian Elmo Mancini, trying to track her down. Jackson eventually tracks her down on his own doorstep, so to speak, as she's Pool Manager at the Flamingo. When his pursuit of her ends in tears and an untimely dip in the Flamingo swimming pool, Jackson loses his money therefor the cash to fund his stay AND race car motor. Jackson does however land Rusty, and after a day spent together taking in the various sites of Nevada (such as Hoover Dam and Lake Mead) their "friendship" is strained when they become rivals in the Flamingo Employee Talent Contest where The King performs the memorable title track in attempt to win the money to fund his engine. When that fails, and all he gets is an all expense paid two week honeymoon in Las Vegas, a downcast Elvis and his mechanic receive funding from an unlikely source: Rusty's father. You know what happens, even if you've not seen it! Elvis' guys get the car ready just in time for him to make the starting grid at the last minute....and, yes, 8 hours later in the early hours of the morning, Elvis is returning to Fremont Street as winner of the Las Vegas GP..."Lucky" indeed. And he and Ann-Margret finish the movie by getting married; not a bad weeks work! Viva Las Vegas IS a classic. It's never going to be in the "Casino","Forrest Gump" or "American Beauty" class of movie but if you just want 85 minutes of quick, easy, relaxed fun from a bygone era; this is perfect! I should say that two of my biggest loves in life are Elvis Presley and Las Vegas however so...I may not be biased! Check it out yourself...
Viva Las Vegas (1964): Dir: George Sydney / Cast: Elvis Presley, Anne Margret, Cesare Danova, Jack Carter, William Demarest: Would it be fair to blame Elvis Presley for every pop star attempting to be an actor? This is not a promising start to those to follow through. The title regards a view of Las Vegas lifestyles but other than that, the film is embarrassing. Lame story is simply Presley as race car driver Lucky Jackson (how lucky can he be to get associated with this junk)? Then we have Anne Margret as swimming coach Rusty (what is with the names)? Lucky and the rival driver he is competing against are both gunning for Rusty's affections. How "lucky" can a girl get? Director George Sidney not only treats viewers to a sudden ending but also undeniably stupid music numbers that occur out of nowhere. Each musical number becomes progressively worse allowing both leads to appear like total asses. Elvis is "lucky" he still had a career after this, and Margret is "rusty" in more ways than one. William Demarest plays Rusty's father who should be so proud that his son is an idiot. Others who saw fit to smudge their career and reputation with this garbage is Cesare Danova and Jack Carter, both of whom should know better. It exploits the popularity of Elvis but I'm sure his popularity will remain even though this film should be tossed out into a busy Las Vegas interstate. Score: 1 / 10
