After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.
The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
First of all, I haven't watched the original movie yet (The Omen 1976) so I am not regarding this as a remake, but just like everyone is saying, it was a bad remake, welp, to me, it's a bad "movie". And without its being a remake, I don't get it, there is nothing special about this movie, and it feels like it's trying to get you somewhere but then fails and strays from the road. Aside from a very few good moments, this is absolutely nonsense. I had high hopes, because of the title, and the opening, and most importantly, how people praise the original movie which I will definitely watch. I don't think this is the movie that my cousin had recommended to me, he must've meant the 76' one.3.5/10
There is something off-putting about it. I know, it's The Omen, there is supposed to be something off-putting about it, but its not in the creepy good way.I think the bad after-taste is that it follows the original far too close and because of that, like most remakes, it's not saying anything new. It sort of leaves the viewer in the position where they don't understand why they are still watching it.True, the first Omen does seem dated...but even then it adds to the retro appeal and, honestly, it still seems fresh. The concepts, the movie, it was all new in the original and you still have that sense when you go back it it.Honestly, dated isn't bad. it takes a special kind of short-bus rider to dislike something just because it looks old.The remake, it's covering the same old ground and, honestly, aside for a couple dream sequences and the scene at the zoo, it hasn't really improved at all.And then you have the cast Liev Schreiber doesn't really fill Gregory Peck's shoes. Julie Stiles is OK...but wooden compared to Lee Remick.Thewlis was good, but Warner made the more believable photographer. In fact, the only real improvement is Postlethwaite but this is the one case where they really cast a better actor in the role. Troughton was OK, but really, you can't compare. And the talking Damien...no, he was creepier when he didn't really speak. So what you are left with is a shallow remake that doesn't say anything new, offers no revelations, no new insight, and doesn't have the same caliber actors in it.I mean, the only people that are going to like it more, are the mouth-breathers that can't stand watching anything dated.
This an awful movie. The this one of the worst horror movies ever made. The original The Omen from 1976 is good movie. See that movie. Damien Omen II is a lot better movie. That is a good movie. Omen III final conflict is a lot better that is a great movie. Omen IV the awakening is a better movie and that was awful. This movie is so similar to the original that there is no point to this movie at all. It is not scary at all. It is one of the most unnecessary movie of all time. I do not know why it got a 5.5. That is just overrating it. I give it 1 out 10. Because it is just a pile of steaming pooh pooh. This is just awful. This is not a good movie at all. It is one of the worst horror movies of all time. Do not see it.
Very surprised at how a remake of a classic movie could be as good.It ran alongside very well but had enough changes to put it's own stamp on.Obvious not as good as the original but never is any remake. In fact I don't see this as a remake...just an update.Very well directed and think the lead was very much a broody Peck-like character.I think the story is important about the evil over good world state which is becoming more and more evident by week...certainly more now than in the 70's when the original was made. Maybe it was just a wake up call for the young of today. Great extras on the DVD and well worth a watch.
