Truly Dreadful Film
Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
I know this review is coming a little late, but better late than never. And maybe it is better this way because now that the furor has died down, people might be able to see this viewpoint a little more clearly. Amir Khan is one of the biggest misogynist in the film industry today. Although very subtle and with an urban facade therefore more dangerous. The film concerns three bachelors Tashi (Imran Khan), Nitin (Kunal Roy Kapoor) and Arup (Vir Das). They are apparently so poor despite having jobs, that they live like sub-humans. I suspect they just do not want to clean their room. Tashi has a reasonably good looking fiancée Sonia (Shenaz Treasury) who is very rich and her parents talk of giving the couple an apartment and a car once they get married - to which not once does Tashi object. Yet there is a very 'Poor Tashi' vibe about the entire thing. On the course of her work as an air stewardess, Sonia (the idiot that she is) agrees to deliver a package accepted from a passenger and a complete stranger. She in turn delegates the job to Tashi (no Q&A here either). The package is mixed up with Nitin's stool sample and the film carries on from here with its toilet humor. On a work assignment with Nitin, he meets Menaka (Purnia Jagannathan), goes to interview and photograph a female celebrity and later make lewd jokes about her. Seriously, I have never seen anyone behaving like this at work. It is obvious that Menaka has started fancying Tashi, but Tashi doesn't care to tell her about Sonia despite the many chances he gets. Then there is Arup, whose boss has made life hell for him. He has a girlfriend who decides to marry someone else. She becomes the inspiration for the song which has probably now become the anthem for misogynists. Interestingly, the boss is never honored with a song. Nor are the many cheating men in the film including Tashi. The man-woman relationships in this film have so much insecurity and friction that it will give any thinking person diarrhea. The three types of women are: The fool, the cougar and the chudail. There is more disturbing stuff: The encounter scene between the police and the gangsters in which no one except Tashi and Sonia survive is kind of treated as fun - as if those policemen dying had no significance. It's their job to die a dog's death.. they sign up for that, who cares about them or their families. Further mockery is made of an inspector's injury who is wounded in the same encounter. If this country is inhabitable today, it is because of these very men and these very heroic sacrifices, not because of Amir Khan & Co or their vile films. This part was the most appalling which is saying a lot.Seriously the biggest S#!t that has happened is this movie itself and the reception it got at the time of its release. The way it resonated with the urban youth, makes the future really scary. What a waste of reel!
The bad:I am not totally against the use of bad language in films - some times it is totally appropriate - but I think there were times in this movie when it was just being used for the sake of it, and/or just to get cheap laughs from teenagers who still find the use of the F-word funny. One thing I love about Bollywood is it manages to get laughs with having to resort to bad language - and long may it remain that way.The good:The plot is fast-paced and it gets down to business pretty much from the get-go. I was watching it with my 17 year-old son and he thoroughly enjoyed it (maybe he is the target audience for gross-out comedy). It has some classic comedic moments and there were many times I laughed out loud.If you enjoyed Hangover then this is likely to be something you'll enjoy too.I did watch it with sub-titles on, but from what I can remember the dialog is almost all in English. Maybe this was to try and give it wider appeal.
And truly, crap happened. What is Delhi belly? Its about having bad belly in Delhi. It's as simple as that. I could decipher in 5 minutes what was happening, I surely right in the first frame that it was about the package and then how could they get it was the rest of the movie, but hey did they get it, watch the movie please. It's all fin filled and neatly embedded some may say, but for me it was more forced coincidences and puerile humour. Yes, we call each of our friends with the F word, but that does not mean it has to be a language of the movie. Also, the hinglish version uses bad words for every reason it has. I am Okay with this, but what was the point all this movie was about is what it makes predictable.Tale written well but surely not told efficiently as per me. It just had 90 minutes and with the unnecessary flips like Arup's girl friend and his imagination, Niitn's sting stint for his owner were ot so much needed and the plot would have better focused with the goons and the mischief. If a movie is trying to be cool, then it is very un cool and this movie tries very hard to be. I was reminiscent of Lock Stock and two Smoking Barrels and even and old Hindi movie like Ek Se Badhkar Ek. Of course many crime comedy movies have been made and for sure this has a very realistic appeal and feel, thanks to cinematographer and the art director to have created that. Acting if any was done by Vijay Raaz and he stood out while others just chipped in. No special mention for other actors is needed and the one line everyone did their piece aptly should suffice. Music, was good and for me I was happy that this not include much of music and all it had was pieces. A good one to many and an instant cult film to many more, but for me it was just another movie that was spun out of the mill that surely gave many memorable movies. It was average and it's not as fluid as so many have claimed, it tries hard by digressing but it's just an attempt thus far. For me it's 2/5. (I would be the first one to criticize this movie may be, but I am just being honest with myself).
Where to begin, first of all i don't understand why people praise this movie. It is one of the most overrated movies of 2011.Aamir khan has created a brand for himself such that anything and everything he does has to be appreciated(no matter if ghajni was a rip off of memento) and if a person opposes his ideology,he stands to be ridiculed.Secondly, youth in urban cities are aping western culture and thus find abusive words such as s$$t and f$$k cool, this movie captures youth's pulse perfectly and every 2nd dialogue mouthed by the actors is either "balls" or "f$$k".Don't get me started on the acting front, imran khan sleepwalks in most of his movies and here also he does the same.He has the same deadpan expression throughout the movie but people and critics say that its his best performance till date.Female actors are only there to perform sex scenes but during their interview, they said it was part of the script(please explain to me how a cunnilingus scene is part of the script??) The jokes are awful, sorry but i don't find farting and toilet jokes funny.Overall, please don't watch this movie,u will be wasting your time.
