Disapointment
I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.
As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
The acting in this movie is really good.
OK, so maybe if you're expecting a sci-fi movie you will find this to be more of a war movie I guess, but if you go with the premise, it's very well done and acted. Many have said this apparently but the ratings are relatively lower than I think they should be. Perhaps this is because there is a very narrow genre for this type of movie. Might be too realistic of a scenario for those that like fantasy sci-fi. Might be a bit more like what it would really be like to be invaded. Not much fun there really. If I had produced, directed, shot, or acted in this movie or even done the audio and music, I would be proud of it.
I enjoyed this movie & found it to be a competent & entertaining offering in all respects. The story line was well developed & engaging. The characters, though somewhat clichéd to some extent, were believable & well rounded. The acting, sets & direction were flawless. Alien Outpost is definitely no amateur hour effort. Yep. It's a great flick. But let's face it... it is imbedded with a non too subtle political subtext & could easily have been called 'Terrorist' Outpost. To begin with, the troops are American marines stationed in an Arabic country, namely Pakistan, where they are constantly under attack from the local tribesmen. In fact, the only enemy we see for a good part of the movie are turban-bound combatants who object to the presence of an American outpost in their country. But of course the Americans 'must' be there to fight the big bad terrorists. I mean... aliens. And the overwhelming premise presented by the film is that, yes.. it's okay for Americans to slap a military outpost in any country they want & sovereignty be damned. However, political bias notwithstanding it's a great flick & to be honest, the behaviour of the local tribesmen would probably be just the same if the main combatants were in fact aliens.
After watching the movie in spite of the low score I felt compelled to write a review.Sorry about the expression but... What-The-Hell with the low score?. Is this for real?.I was expecting a pure-garbage shaky-cam non-stop-action with non- existent character development and/or story and I got all the above reversed!.Really, if you're trying to find out if this movie is good or not, read the reviews, don't believe the score.Alien Outpost starts a little slow but with solid character development, all the soldiers had their personalities and they are all lovable in their own way, you get to know them, the action sequences are not over- the-top and also very rare, aside from the final moments. This is a movie that focus almost entirely on the story and it's characters, it's actually a sci-fi movie that intends on telling you a good sci-fi story and for me it succeeds. If only they could get more money and resources to do it, this could easily surpass any of the Hollywood crap i've seen lately. As an invasion-alien movie it's somewhat average, as a solid sci-fi with a good mix of action and drama, this movie excels.Thumbs up for the solid acting, the nice story that stays with you after you finish watching it and for the imaginative script, I'm actually looking forward to the next movie, which I'm sure it can be a success if they're allowed to make it.People, stop reading numbers, just watch this movie, you won't regret it, except if you like stupid movies that depend on incredible CGI and dumb plots.Congrats for the accomplishment.
I have to admit I was a little skeptical when I sat down at home to watch this because most of what I read about it was not favorable, however I kept the usual open mind and switched on. One of the first things that caused a minor frown was seeing a 1950's built Bell chopper like those used during Vietnam still operating with the military in 2033, Very odd seeing an 80 year old helicopter still in active service, this was totally ridiculous but perhaps I am being too picky, maybe the US government couldn't afford to update them. Joking apart I decided to focus on the fact that this was a low budget movie and to behave myself. Anyway look at Pitch Black another low budget movie but now considered a classic by many including myself. Alien Outpost doesn't have a particularly original storyline or indeed style, acting was poor in places yet good in parts. Special effects were few but perfectly acceptable. Is this a great movie? No it isn't but it did do several things I require of any movie I watch and that is to keep my attention and entertained. Overall I found it very engaging and as it progressed, the characterizations became more interesting and a deeper sense of involvement and concern as to how things would turn out became more important to me. Although I didn't really recognize any of the actors which is not really an issue, the chap in charge, a Jean Claude Damme kind of (loosely lookalike amused me immensely. Will i ever watch this again? definitely
