In the sequel to Paul Verhoeven's loved/reviled sci-fi film, a group of troopers taking refuge in an abandoned outpost after fighting alien bugs, failing to realize that more danger lays in wait. Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation has a pretty small budget but also a pretty bad script as well since it looks cheap for the entire film. The perfomances were awful and just terrible as a whole alongside the characters of course plus the movie was released in 2004 so it makes sense why it looks so awful since it looks like a straight to dvd garbage like easily. It goes without saying that the original "Aliens 2" was probably the definitive humans versus animal killer; especially when that animal killer is predatory in nature and exists solely to infest, devour and conquer. The insects, or Arachnids as they are called in this movie series, are no exception. They exist solely to exterminate mankind, multiply and move on – they are here to vanquish anything that gets in their way and propagate their species. That said, this movie makes an interesting twist in the grand scheme of things. The original movie was a bit tongue in cheek, used humor plenty, and gore was often thrown around for comedy relief. Simple 'oops' moments happened when someone's home country was blown up for example. In this movie, the scenery has drastically changed and is closer to the computer generated special that aired around 2003. The genre seems to be a combination of many popular movie genres; but namely, you should see something that is familiar if you are a fan of Jurrasic Park, Alien vs. Predator and Aliens 2; there seems to be a little bit of humor thrown into here as well. However, unlike other movies of this type, there is also some hoard style themes going on – namely people are infected with insects and slowly become ravenous zombies out to infect their fellow officers and ultimately bring everything to the Earth homefront. If anything, this manages to accomplish what the original Star Trek's Borg where meant to be, before they were changed from insectoid to more humanoid cyborgs. Better still are the psychic references thrown throughout the movie. So if you are looking for a survival horror sci-fi flick that spans multiple genres, pays homages to things past, this is the movie for you. If you are looking for something strictly Starship Troopers, you may want to look towards the original movie or the computer generated sequels – this movie will NOT satisfy any Starship Trooper fan unless you want different story modes throughout.Originally posted to Orion Age (http://www.orionphysics.com/? p=2507)
The suits have basically taken the action adventure franchise and made a small horror movie out of it. The movie is inferior in every way. The CG is actually inferior after 7 years. The real effects are also inferior due to the smaller budget. The cast is also smaller. The first one had a budget around $100M but this one is listed at $7M. That accounts for most of the difference. The odd thing is that they got Brenda Strong to come back. Of course she died in the first one, but in this one, she's the Sergent leading the group. The cast is limited to around 15. Most of them are B-list or lower actors. This feels like a straight-to-video, oh wait it is.It's a big disappointment that they didn't attempt a big production big scale action sequel to the original. It's rare for Hollywood to not do sequels. Who knows what happened. The other big problem is that the lighting is all very dark. It was probably easier to cover up all the deficiencies. As a horror movie, it helped to have the darkness. But when the action gets going, the darkness obscures too much.As for the story, after an action start, it really grinds to a halt. The actors grumble their lines. They transition to a more horror oriented story. It takes a long while to make that transition. Once it transitioned, it became too chaotic to get a handle on who's who in the movie.
I went to see the movie with high expectations. The first Starship Troopers movie is actually one of my favorite movies of all time. This movie is a let-down in all aspects: the story is predictable and deviates from the original, the acting is awful and there are no special effects to be honest. It seems as though the studio had 7 million dollars that needed to be burnt. In my opinion, the franchise should focus on a man vs alien-bug storyline. The movie seems as though they were trying to mimic "Species" while trying to retain the Starship Troopers title. Thus including a host of unnecessary sex scenes. I do not know how the laws concerning movies work, but I think Paul Verhoeven should sue whoever decided to make this piece of crap. If you value your money and time, do not subject yourself to the agony of sitting through this movie.
