As Good As It Gets
It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.
Not sure how, but this is easily one of the best movies all summer. Multiple levels of funny, never takes itself seriously, super colorful, and creative.
This movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows
It's like this: "I've got a great idea for a movie, a heterosexual man falling for a transsexual, but I can't seem to make it interesting enough so I'll throw in the transsexuals' sisters drama, some prudish outfits for the tranny, a penis shot and two people getting unjustly arrested to make it interesting." This was a bad story with terrible acting (except Rupert Graves) and a terribly prudishly dressed transsexual. This is completely overrated by the people who've rated this movie. The idea is wonderful, somewhat "Crying Game"-ish, but for a similar story (man falling in love with transsexual) done much better see "Crying Game".
I usually rate my favorite films based on one main ingredient. I need to be able to see the film over and over again and it still has to get to me every time ;-) This film did just that! I am a big film fan and have seen many movies over these many years, however somehow this one slipped right by me. I first saw this film on cable in 2005 and couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised and excited by it as I wasn't expecting much. After viewing it, I immediately bought the DVD release (btw I think its important to support the best efforts in film and not copy them, as your purchase does make a statement). Its rare for me these days to find a film that so completely takes me by surprise. Not that I am jaded or anything but I have been around the block a few times ;-), its rare a film can make me feel all lovestruck and giddy with delight! I would have to say not since 'Pretty Woman' has a film tickled me in THAT way ;-) You could almost say this film combines the spirit of both 'Pretty Woman' and 'Working Girl'. This is not meant in any way to make light of the subject matter as this is indeed a deep and complex subject that can involve a broadband of emotions and many times does not have the expected happy ending. After having viewed this film over 10x now, I highly recommend this film as one of the best from 1996. While its not a perfect 10, it has many of the ingredients that bring it just bubbling under. My favorite scenes are the ones where the two main characters interact. Especially the scene in Paul's apt when they rekindle their old friendship, put on a record and dance about. Both actors deserve a great big thanks and indeed praise for their work & participation in this film. So if you are ever feeling down and abit under the weather, whatever your doldrums, sit back and enjoy this film which will warm your heart, expand your mind AND tickle your toes.
Sweet, unafraid; understated and not in your face. Why in the Hell do movies about gay guys seem to be so much better than Lesbian Flix? Anybody know? Oh well; nice story, predictable and appealing to those who like "chick flix" and gender benders; in that order. I liked it. Sure, gay guys will love this; Doesn't take chances like Jordan's flick; Something of a "G" rated Crying Game. But, there is a great line "hey 'it' fits" says Prentiss, which really does bump this into "R" rated fare, during a sweet sexual moment between the leads. But, in general, this is a movie about "fitting in". And, as that this movie does convince and probably one of the better "indies" of 97. Enjoy
Predictable like an unsalted Saltine, this movie takes what could have been a rich an entertaining story and creates an intriguing blend of indifference.Unsurprises meet us at every turn. Boy meets... uh, Girl. Boy loses Girl. Boy wins Girl story. The mere addition of a post-op TS does not make for a compelling movie. Add on top of that bland performances by the title characters with all the dynacism of a glass of prune juice. And the extraneous plot lines of their work, his girlfriend (wouldn't you have liked to see a confrontation here?) and her relationship with her sister's family are just as undeveloped, if not vacuous.Maybe this is a tour de force for post-ops everywhere, but it's really tour de flat.If not for the music, it would be among the worst movies I have ever seen. Two stars out of Ten.
