Crappy film
In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
Emilio Paolo Miraglia created two giallo — this film and The Red Queen Kills Seven Times. This one goes more into the horror realm than the typical themes of the genre.Lord Alan Cunningham starts this movie off by running away from an insane asylum, a place he's been since the death of his redheaded wife, Evelyn, who he caught having sex with another man. To deal with his grief, Alan does what any of us would do — pick up redhead prostitutes and strippers, tie them up, then kill them.A seance freaks Alan out so badly he passes out, so his cousin — and only living heir — Farley moves in to take care of him, which basically means going to strip clubs and playing with foxes. Alan nearly kills another stripper before Farley gives him some advice — to get over Evelyn, he should marry someone that looks just like her. Alan selects Gladys (Marina Malfatti, All the Colors of the Dark) as his new wife and comes back home.Sure, you meet someone one night and marry them the next. But nothing could compare Gladys for the weirdness of living in an ancient mansion, along with a staff of identical waitresses, Evelyn's brother and Alan's wheelchair-bound aunt. Our heroine is convinced that Evelyn is not dead. And the other family members get killed off — Albert with a snake and Agatha is eaten by foxes!Gladys even looks at the body in the tomb before Alan catches her and slaps her, as he is going crazier and crazier. Finally, Evelyn rises from her grave, which sends him back to a mental institution. The big reveal? Gladys and Farley were in on it all along. But wait, there's more! Susan, the stripper who survived Alan's attack, was the one who was really Evelyn and Gladys has been poisoned! Before she dies, the lady who we thought was our heroine wipes out the stripper and Farley gets away with the perfect crime. But wait! There's more! Alan had faked his breakdown and did it all so that he could learn that it was Farley who was making love to his wife and killed her when she refused to run away with him. A fight breaks out, sulfur goes into the pool and Farley gets burned by acid. He's arrested and Alan — who up until now was pretty much the villain of this movie — gets away with all of his crimes! This is a decent thriller, but it really feels padded in parts and tends to crawl. That said, it has some great music, incredibly decorated sets and some twists. Not my favorite giallo, but well worth a Saturday afternoon watch. There are some moments of sheer beauty here, such as the rainstorm where Alan sees Evelyn's ghost rise.
"The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave" focuses on an English aristocrat who has dealt with the death of his unfaithful wife, Evelyn, by engaging in BDSM with local prostitutes at his remote estate before killing them. He soon after decides to marry a local ex-stripper, but their marriage is plagued by unusual events on the property, many of which are centered around the dilapidated tomb where Evelyn's body lay.Oft noted for its unique blend of Italian giallo and Gothic horror, "The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave" is one of the more under-appreciated films among its peers. Its mixture of two distinct genres does make it stand out from the pack, as it oscillates between seventies kitsch to Euro-Gothic throughout, though the Gothic overtones of the picture seem to be the ones that prevail, and that make it most memorable. Not only does it look the part, but it also is rife with themes and concepts unique to Gothic literature (psychological instability, family feuds, the supernatural).Die-hard fans of giallos and your everyday horror-goer alike will find something to enjoy here, as there is a bit of everything across the board: a chilling atmosphere, fantastic twists and turns in a surprisingly elaborate plot, some fairly disturbing gore, and a couple of jump scares even. It's a beautifully-shot film, featuring some borderline-surrealist flashback sequences, and some frankly terrifying images of the ghostly Evelyn lurking in the crypt. The film is at times legitimately creepy, even today. The sets at times evoke those of a Hammer picture, and the film is also steeped in color that would make Argento or Bava proud.Anthony Steffen plays the unstable Lord Cunningham quite well, toeing the line between despicable and horrendous, while Marina Malfatti plays his newlywed wife living in the shadow of Evelyn. Erika Blanc has a memorable role as a stripper-turned-almost-victim of Cunningham, and plays a vital role in the proceedings. It's remarkable how the film toys with its viewers emotions in regard to the characters, as it reveals more and more information as it shifts character perspectives. The only real issue I have with the film is that it ends too abruptly; it's as though the writers didn't know where to end it, and it ultimately feels like a lost opportunity.Overall, "The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave" is an overlooked gem. It operates on both fronts of giallo and ghost story, and director Emilio Miraglia keeps a fine balance that is completely engrossing. The eerie setting combined with the clever plot twists and some unforgettable imagery make this a top- notch Gothic chiller. Bar the abrupt conclusion, "Evelyn" scares, thrills, and titillates in equal measure. 9/10.
If 90 plus minutes of women's crotch shots, bulging breasts and naked butts give you a cinematic thrill, then this movie should be right up your porn drenched alley. But for lovers of Gothic horror with a grand sense of guignol, then skip it. The sadomasochistic themes are overdone with wealthy Anthony Steffan the sleaziest of all Euro trash lovers using every beautiful female he meets for his sick pleasures. Whipping their almost completely naked bodies, he simply gets off on the pain he makes them endure. Finally finding one he claims to love, he gets impulsively married, and even his proposal seems perverted. Well, certain strange occurrences makes the new bride suspicious, leading to the possibility of her own fate being just as violent. Then, there's the revelation about the title character, Steffan's first wife, whose apparent infidelities drove him over the edge in the first place.Set in the present day, this tries to give off a feeling of period Gothic horror but fails on every level. The film manages to be perverse and disturbingly violent with such sequences as a man in the way getting a sudden snake bite and realizing that his assassin is burying him while his last few breaths struggle to leave him. A wheelchair bound Aunt (who appears to be younger than her nephew) also gets a disturbing fate. I get a sense of hatred towards women in this, both through Steffen and the writer and director, making all of the women passive and subservient sexually and emotionally. The film becomes difficult to tolerate and poor quality in the editing and musical score gives it a truly dated feel. With all the badly made cheap horror films of the late 1960's and early 70's, I rank this among the worse. The conclusion makes absolutely no sense. I subtitle it "Taste the Blood of Perversion".
This Italian semi-horror movie starts out very much like a soft core porn movie and turns into a mystery that has a few to many loose ends to be good, that and the fact it is rather dull just makes this film rather unwatchable for my tastes. The only thing really worth watching are the many boobs spread throughout the film. The story has a guy who at the beginning of the movie luring girls to his castle where he proceeds to take them to his dungeon, go berserk and seemingly kill them. They show the nudity, but they never really show the murders at this point in the film. Then the guy finds a nice red head at a party and proceeds to make out with her and marry her. He has a thing for red heads you see as his beloved former wife Evelyn was also one, she also died under circumstances that must have not been the viewing audience's business. After a lot of talky scenes murders start to take place involving snakes, foxes and such. At this point it is easy enough to figure out who is responsible for the murders and what the motive is then you have a nonsensical ending where everything wraps up not so nicely. This movie just did not work for me, it left me with to many questions and the last third of the film just did not have the boobs of the first two thirds of the film. Explaining Evelyn's death would have helped the film as would have some sort of ending where Evelyn did rise from the grave. Granted the title is not totally misleading as she did sort of leave the grave, just not under her own power. The gore is very light for the most part as there is a scene with the foxes and a scene at the end with quite a bit of blood too. I just thought for the most part this movie was a tad dull.
