Purely Joyful Movie!
Excellent but underrated film
As Good As It Gets
This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
After a long time, it was nice to see Tamil cinema for what its known for, slick production values. Ayan brings out that very well thanks to the tight story which does not bore you, slick action sequences (especially the Congo chase scene) and good acting. Surya is in his element as a young smuggler. Akashdeep Saigal seems a bit over the top as a stereo typical villain but seems to hold his own. Other actors support the story well. What is nice about this movie is no unnecessary masala and sub plots to mar the overall tight storyline. Kudos!Watch the movie for some refreshing acting by Surya and company. Watch it for virgin locales hitherto unexplored in contemporary domestic cinema i.e. Congo. Watch it for the tight storyline minus the regular masala.
Veedokkade is a slick action entertainer that deals with the business of diamond trafficking with the backdrop of friendship. The plus points of the film are Surya, Tamanna and nice screenplay with good commercial payoffs. On the flip side, certain scenes (introducing heroine and her family as prostitutes / ghastly portrayal of friend's killing episode) may be offending for movie lovers of delicate sensibilities. On a whole, Veedokkade is a slickly executed action flick.Cinematography by MS Prabhu is excellent. The virgin locations of Africa are well explored (especially the locations of last but one song shot in a desert). Music by Harris Jayaraj is just OK. Fights by Kanal Kannan (especially the first chase shot in African country) are superb. Dialogues are adequate. Production values by AVM banner are grand.
Ayan is a complete run of a mill movie which has a little bit of everything. The stunts are good and fresh to Tamil cinema (especially the parkour sequence in the beginning) and the songs are well filmed. Surya is stunning and he surprises the audience with his each movie. Tamannah is cute. But the biggest drawback of the movie is that it sometimes tries to be too logical and it borrows a lot of concepts from Hollywood films. The action sequences had a lot of inspiration from movies like "casino royale" and the "Bourne" series. Even the concept of removing cocaine from a doll was inspired by Oscar winning "Traffic". But overall it's not a bad idea to spend 3 hours.
K.V.Anand and Auba were back with Ayan after Kanaa Kandaen (which was an excellent movie which became average hit due to lack of publicity). I have known them through a monthly 'super novel' where Suba(Suresh-Bala) were writers and Anand was a photographer which made them unite in film industry. I was a great fan of them and eagerly waited for this. And they are back with an excellent intelligent movie in which hit was written everywhere Surya plays a role of smuggler (not a serious one) which was characterized superbly and the movie moves in a jet fast with humor, thrill, action at right proportions. Especially first fight sequence was superb challenging Hollywood. Songs which was a slight let down from Harris has been pictured superbly locations mesmerizes us. Tamanna ,Vijay TV Jegan(which was a sweet surprise) , and Prabhu done their parts well. Story revolves around rivalry between two smuggling groups yet it was joyful ride with humor from starting to end. After lot of days i heard clapping in theater from starting to end and everybody came out of theater with smile in face which tells the films victory. We cannot categorize this movie into particular genre like thriller, action,or comedy. It is a new kind of genre with intelligently taken scenes which sometimes surpasses Hollywood and sure it also belongs to super duper hit genre.
