Pretty Good
It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film
all i can say is a lack luster performance. one of his few turds. how does one make a movie about walking? ashamed he took on the script.all i can say is a lack luster performance. one of his few turds. how does one make a movie about walking? ashamed he took on the script.all i can say is a lack luster performance. one of his few turds. how does one make a movie about walking? ashamed he took on the script.all i can say is a lack luster performance. one of his few turds. how does one make a movie about walking? ashamed he took on the script.all i can say is a lack luster performance. one of his few turds. how does one make a movie about walking? ashamed he took on the script.all i can say is a lack luster performance. one of his few turds. how does one make a movie about walking? ashamed he took on the script.all i can say is a lack luster performance. one of his few turds. how does one make a movie about walking? ashamed he took on the script.all i can say is a lack luster performance. one of his few turds. how does one make a movie about walking? ashamed he took on the script.
I can not, for the life of me, fathom how this film received so many awards. The acting was none existing, the writers must have written the whole film in less seconds then the film has minutes and each of those 103 minutes felt like an hour. Apparently I missed the deep artistic meaning behind two men, who just so happen to share the same name, end up playing douche in an over sized sandpit and get lost. Watching two men walk around aimlessly in a desert without hardly saying a word is not enough to entertain me. I experience more excitement watching the sand in an hour glass fill the bottom half. The idea of the film doesn't interest me, the writers have done nothing to make it interesting and sitting through this whole film was torture. Instead of watching the whole film, I suggest you watch the trailer. You will have seen pretty much all of the dialogue and the highlights of the film.
About ten years ago, I went to a small independent movie theater on the North side of Chicago. I saw a film that was made on a tiny budget with two actors and some extras. Gerry is about two nameless guys played by Matt Damon and Casey Affleck. They park their cars along a road to see a historic monument thinking they'll only be gone an hour or so. Being in the moment and having an overanxious way about them, they don't bother to bring any food and water. They also follow a worn out trail which causes them to be lost in a vast desert wasteland with no shelter in sight. Reflecting on Gerry 10 years later, it reminded of a few films that came before and after its release. Part Blair Witch Project (1999) and part Open Water (2005), it's an exercise that effectively relies on minimal movie resources to create real tension and fear. There are critics that have deemed it slow and polarizing. I found it effective because the stars are real life friends who's chemistry is evident throughout the film's entire length. As they try to find water and civilization, time is running out. You get so involved with their plight that you're right there with them every step of the way. The movie's only low point could possibly be the ending. It drags on and toys with the audience. It could have used a little editing. However, the ride to get there is worth it.The film was directed by Gus Van Sant. With films like Good Will Hunting (1997) and Drugstore Cowboy (1989), in 2002 this was a complete different turn from what he had done before. I'd call him "Guts" Van Sant for making something this risky. He's pulls it off. With a hauntingly beautiful music score and breathtaking cinematography, Gerry is a small gem of a film. Oh and about the title, you'll just have to see the movie yourself to find out.
"Gerry" is the story of two friends who get lost while hiking in the desert. There is not much to the film, very little dialog and tons of scenery shots. This is the first film in Gus Van Sant's death trilogy (which are based on true murders), with "Elephant", and "Last Days" to follow. As the characters get lost we become lost with them. I felt guilty that I could go get a drink of water in the next room. The film is a lot of long shots, such as them walking or them trying to map their way back, or incredibly daunting drawn-out scenery shots, and an hallucination caused by dehydration, which was done perfectly. But the film is entertaining, not the best of Gus Van Sant but pretty damn good. Matt Damon and Casey Affleck give outstanding performances. They do what a lot of actors can't do with a full script, and that is that they give us character development without telling us anything. I give "Gerry" an 8 out of 10.
