At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.

In the first appearance of the popular 'MechaGodzilla' character, sneaky ape-aliens from "Black Hole Planet 3" disguised as humans build a giant robotic MechaGodzilla and send it out on a rampage disguised as Godzilla (the reason for which is never explained). Godzilla's off-again, on-again buddy "Anguirus" senses that something is wrong and in the course of the resulting battle, a chunk of the disguise is knocked off revealing shiny 'space titanium'. At this point, the real thing arrives on the scene only to have his kaiju-butt kicked by MechaGodzilla, who sheds his disguise. A sub-plot involving an Interpol agent and an ancient statue ultimately leads to the release of the film's fourth monster, King Caesar, who teams up with Godzilla in the final showdown against the mechanical menace while the intrepid Interpol agent deals with the space-simians. Generally, while "Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla" is better than the preceding "Godzilla vs. Megalon" (faint praise indeed), number 15 in the series is a pretty lackluster outing. The story does not bear close scrutiny (especially the pseudo-spiritual prophecy and the statue theft sub-plot) and relies on convenient gimmicks like the professor's trick pipe or Godzilla's sudden ability to become magnetic. The MechaGodzilla outfit is not bad (although the metal clearly bends when the robot is moving) but looks ridiculous when flying. As a new addition to Toho's kaiju farm, King Caesar is unimpressive: a vaguely leonid lizard with immense ears and patches of ratty-looking fur. The Godzilla suit has the standard 1970's look with a reduced snout, bigger eyes and a pronounced brow, giving him a much more benign appearance than his original saurian profile. The trend to anthropomorphise his behaviour continues to the extent that at one point the monster seems to be doing a Bruce Lee impression. I watched an adequately dubbed version that was typical of the era - voices that didn't really match the characters, odd pauses and expressions, and the usual mismatch between what you see and what you hear when a character speaks. Although some of Akira Ikufube's original themes are heard, the film's 'jazzy' soundtrack did nothing for me, and dates the film even more so then the 1970's styles. This was the penultimate film in the Showa-era series, and while an improvement over the preceding two films, likely did little to help keep the franchise viable. Definitely one for fans or students of the genre (and maybe undiscerning kids not too spoiled by CGI mega-pics).

I absolutely love Godzilla, always have always will and this was my first Godzilla film and my favourite. Don't get me wrong I love the original 1954 classic as well as The Return of Godzilla 1984 but this is still the best. The reason, Mechagodzilla makes his first appearance and though we have had at least five different versions of Mechagodzilla this design is still the best.A woman has a prophecy that when a black cloud appears, a huge monster will arrive to destroy the world, however when the sun sets two monsters will appear to fight the evil monster and save the world. Meanwhile Godzilla appears from the mountain and goes on a rampage and absolutely hammers poor Anguirus in a brutal and bloody fight. From there Godzilla wreaks havoc on the power plant and it is from here we understand that this Godzilla is not what he seems. Sure enough the real Godzilla appears and fights with the imposter who then transforms to Mechagodzilla controlled by aliens from outer space. Both Godzilla and Mechagodzilla shoot their beams at each other and basically knock each other out big time. Godzilla is thought to be dead because of the heavy blood loss while Mechagodzilla's mechanics are damaged and needs to be fixed. I won't carry on if you haven't seen it but rest assured the finale is brilliant. As mentioned this is my favourite of all Godzilla movies, not only is it action packed, the human side story is engaging and the aliens (which we later find out are apes) are menacing. Also Mechagodzilla to me is easily Godzilla's most powerful foe (sorry King Ghidorah) and the finale will have you covering your eyes in horror as you will think that Godzilla will meet his end.If you enjoy this, I recommend you watch the sequel Terror of Mechagodzilla.

Apelike aliens build a robotic Godzilla to destroy Japan, and the true Godzilla may not be powerful enough to destroy the mechanical monster. Now, you know, there is going to be a certain level of cheese to this film as there is with any Godzilla film. You have men in suits rolling around. And here you have the added factor of the ape aliens (though a far more interesting alien race than the ones associated with King Ghidorah). And yet, this is solid directing and a decent plot, which is much needed after the terrible distraction of Godzilla's alleged son Minya in recent chapters. Some parts of this even come across like an espionage thriller in comparison.

This is the first godzilla movie I ever saw, when I was about five years old, so naturally, I have a lot of nostalgia for this flick. It introduced me to the wonderful world of godzilla movies. I personally think this was an awesome movie. It has four monsters, three awesome monster battles, an ancient prophecy, James Bond esc elements and a killer soundtrack. This is a real return to form for Godzilla after the dismal Godzilla vs Gigan and Godzilla vs Megalon (I actually liked Godzilla vs Hedorah, and I enjoyed the final battle in Gigan, but overall GvG was pretty awful).I love the designs of the monsters. The godzilla suit from Megalon was reused, but it was dramatically improved with an altered head, which had an angry frown and smaller, sharper teeth, which made the suit look a lot more viscous, not like the previous head which made big G look way too cutesy. The Anguirus suit from Destroy All Monsters was reused, which I have no problem with, because the suit looks damn awesome. King Caesar is an awesome monster, though considering he was so integral to the prophecy in the movie, he didn't really do much when he was actually awakened other than get his ass royally handed to him by Mechagodzilla. And now we move on to Godzilla's foe for this movie, his mechanical twin Mechagodzilla. Mechagodzilla just looks incredible. The thing looks damn evil, what with those glaring orange eyes. It sounds evil too, with that screeching roar it makes. The movie has brilliant build up. After their first confrontation ends in a tie (with godzilla seemingly dead), godzilla and mechagodzilla leave to recover. After that point, the movie builds up to an epic climax, and it does not disappoint. Godzilla and caesar fight mechagodzilla in one of the most action packed monster fights ever seen. I highly recommend this movie to any godzilla fan, anyone who's new to the series, or anyone who just likes old B movies.
