Highly Overrated But Still Good
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Almost 30 years later, and this film still transcends above the rest. Although I was born years after this film came out, my heart swells when the intro starts. I believe it is Scorsese's best film. This film really takes you on a journey and puts in the shoes of these people, humanizing their lifestyle and their relationships. The soundtrack makes me giddy, and the way the film is shot truly makes you realize the art of movie making. Every time I re-watch the movie, I catch another small detail, providing more depth, beauty, and realness to the story. The first shot we see of Ray Liotta in the parking lot at the diner, the music, the camera angle, I get goosebumps every time. If you have not seen Goodfellas, stop what you are doing right now and watch it and then re-watch it immediately after again.
This film is the continuation of a whole series of films about organized crime. A young man from a poor family begins to serve the local mafia. Starting with the execution of small orders, punishing the enemies of mafia, he becomes the organizer of large schemes for selling alcohol and cigarettes. He becomes one of the leaders of local mafia group. In addition to the general romanticism inherent in all the feature films about the mafia, this project reveals the existing problems within the mafia society. The authors concentrate viewer's attention on the problem of loyalty and betrayal, price of friendship, role of women and goals of creating organized criminal groups. In addition, the film highlights the inevitability of tough struggles, clashes and reckoning for crimes. A deeper motive is the experience of the main characters. Despite the deep storyline, the film is easily perceived, has unobtrusive everyday colors and a cheerful composition.Summary: Definitely, the film deserves attention of the audience. Guys from the street who "climb the career ladder," living by their own laws - the Code of Honor, and, at the same time, have kind heart - always capture imagination and are an example for imitation. At a minimum, deep down.
I saw a lot of mafia movies and they all are on the same mold. This one is no exception and to me, frankly, it was quite boring. Of course, it is possible that other films under this template are younger than "Goodfellas" and that, if I saw them chronologically, this one would be more interesting, and the others that copy it would be boring. But "The Godfather" was made almost twenty years before this film, so this theory does not hold water either. However, seven nominations and one won Oscar, baton in the hands of Martin Scorsese and the cast which is by no means inferior to that of "The Godfather" rise this achievement above a bunch of similar ones. But as I rated "The Godfather" an eight out of ten, I can not rate this one above7/10
The videography is amazing. The styling and costumes are perfectly fit. Overall an amazing film
