Very disappointing...
Just what I expected
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
While watching this film I couldn't help but laugh but not that I found it to be that funny but because I have actually met over the top religious nut cases in real life. They were my schoolteachers and this movie really took me back to those days where instead of learning math I was learning stuff like if you play an electrical guitar you'll go straight to hell or when you sneeze it's really the man upstairs busy shortening your lifespan by taking away pieces of your breath. Believe it or not that was what my high schoolteachers told their students and it didn't end there.I found SALVATION BOULEVARD funny because the characters in some ways closely resembled my teachers and if I was to show them this film they would undoubtedly freak out and say it makes a mockery out of them. If however you fall into the class of normal people and get easily offended I wouldn't recommend it. Actually I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it at all. It's really a stupid movie if you consider the plot. Some might find it funny others might find it just plain stupid. The only thing really noteworthy about it is the acting, each of the cast members play their parts very well. The film itself never really gets boring but does get slightly annoying in certain places.Final Verdict, it's really not worth going out of your way to see, but if you are curious enough to see it then by all means. I found it funny for completely different reasons so I can't say other people will find it funny but seeing the actors in this film give their over the top performances is worth it if you've come across people like those portrayed in this movie in real life.
First off, let me make it clear that I have no problem with people taking a pop at Tele-evangelists or the dolts who are conned by them. They are ripe for satire and justifiably so. But this film does nobody a service. If you ever needed confirmation that Pierce Brosnan couldn't act his way out of a paper bag then look no further. He is truly, truly terrible. His accent fluctuates between the Queen's English, Australian and Sarf London with no rhyme or reason. In the ill-fitting role of Charismatic Church Leader, he comes across as so insincere, so fake that not even the most rabid creationist would buy it. He is, in a word, awful. But not just Mr Brosnon, no. Everybody is unsympathetic. Gregg Kinnear acts like he dropped one tablet too many somewhere along the line and I didn't give a toss about his plight. There was no one to care about here and no lucid ambition in the storytelling.Synopsis: Tele-evangelist tries to frame bird-brain follower and fails. The end. What was the point?!
The most people are thinking critically VERY reluctantly. The story is just about this our peculiarity. Sometimes it is very good to watch this kind of a movie or to read this kind of a book. It keeps fit!All the actors did their jobs brilliantly, and the casting itself was on top as well. Greg Kinnear is very "recognizable", Pierce Brosnan is very "typical", Marisa Tomei and Jennifer Connelly both are very "comprehensible". Not to mention the dad (Joe Hunt) and the other small characters there... Simply a great job! The sense of humor is just the way I like it - sharp enough, but not sarcastic. One may rather like the people than find them repulsing... What I am just saying? "Them"? Us! This piece is just a lot of fun.
Basically, the movie about a pastor who tries to cover up an accident and things get out of control in the process. Overall, the acting was good throughout. A problem I had with this movie was the "comedy music" that plays when there was a "funny" situation going on. I thought they were pushing it too hard on some scenes. In my opinion, it would have still been as funny without the music. And it's a dark comedy, "comedy music" is not needed in dark comedies. Though it's a bit annoying, but not annoying enough to tamper my enjoyment of the movie. The story is well written with enough twists to keep you guessing, and the metaphors are well done, especially the Christianity themes. If you've seen the movie Four Lions, then this is a Christianity version of it. There's isn't much similarity in story, but it is thematically similar. A good pick for fans of dark comedies.
