It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
A well made movie. Very watchable until I lost patience and had to fast forward the last 20 minutes in 30 second chunks. Costner underplaying it to an insulting degree as usual. His almost zero reaction to everything going on around him was annoying and he leaves his children alone just a little too often! Great directing, make-up and special effects. This could have been a great movie with a different lead actor (maybe a deadpan lookalike of Buster Keaton!)
Kevin Costner might not be a great actor, but most of the times he at least tries. Not in this one though, his character is supposed to go through a big spectrum of emotions through out the movie but his tone of voice and facial expressions seem rather unfazed by the obstacles he's facing. So it gets hard to take the movie seriously when clearly not even the lead is.And the story drags quite a bit, there is very few scenes of suspense in the first hour. It's not all bad, the cinematography is good and the script isn't bad... even if it is rather generic. But overall no I can't really recommend this to anyone who isn't a really big fan of the Costner, and can look pass a not so great performance.
If illogical behavior is a problem for you then you will not enjoy this. The father in this story is not logical. Most parents, if their child has a medical problem, would take their child to a doctor. This father does not. There are other things that this father does not do; the only thing he does is get upset. If you can overlook illogical behavior then this might be a great thriller for you. There was obviously a lot of money spent making this movie but the problem is the writing. I think Kevin Costner did a great job considering the story he had.
I kept thinking Costner must have had an impending balloon payment due; why else would he agree to star in such a ghastly movie. Surely he had to know, at one point during filming, that this was a howler. I am also surprised that Samantha Mathis signed on. While she isn't stellar, she is a decent actress and has appeared in some fine films, i.e. "Jack and Sarah." The rest of the cast was new to me and while the storyline did not permit any breakaway performances, I think the little boy has a future in movies. Can't say the same for any of the other leads. Anyway, I am left with several pithy questions: (1) what was the purpose of shotgun in this tale; and (2) the more burning question: Why the heck did I stay tuned?
