Very disappointing...
Good concept, poorly executed.
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
When I read the synopsis this movie reminded me of Death Proof, Quentin Tarantino's great homage to 70s B-movies. I wasn't thinking that Highwaymen was a ripoff of Death Proof, especially as Highwaymen was released in 2004 and Death Proof 2007. However, thought it might be similar.Well, it's not. While Death Proof was slick, entertaining and had great dialogue(as you'd expect from Tarantino) and was even plausible, Highwaymen is lame and feels contrived throughout. Also feels very cheap - the CGI is pretty weak. The car cabin-view country driving scenes look like they were shot in the 60s!Only reason to watch this movie is Rhona Mitra...
Highwaymen is another road horror movie from Robert Harmon, the director of the classic 80s flick The Hitcher. But where The Hitcher thrilled and chilled the audience with well timed shocks and a truly menacing bad guy, Highwaymen bores with a lack of suspense and an initially interesting but ultimately dull-as-dishwater villain.A maniac is mowing down innocent women in hit and run attacks. When James Cray (Jim Caviezel) sees his wife run down by the psycho driver, he gives chase and crashes into the bad guy, inflicting terrible injuries upon him. James spends three years in prison; the nutjob spends 18 months being rebuilt in hospital before heading out for the highway to continue his hobby.Five years after the death of his wife, James is still trying to avenge his wife, tracking his evil nemesis across the country in a souped up car. When a young lady, Molly (Rhona Mitra), survives an attack, James is able to use her to lure the killer into the open...Despite an interesting premise, Highwaymen fails to replicate any of the tension and terror that made The Hitcher such a great film. The direction is pedestrian, the script lacks bite and the action is unexciting. There are unexplained plot lines, pointless characters (the traffic cop who first tracks and then assists James adds nothing to further the story) and ridiculous moments that will have you choking in disbelief (the car being flipped in the air, Molly's abduction in the junkyard and the ending immediately spring to mind).Do yourself a favour give this one a miss and watch the Hitcher again.
First off, with the creator of "THE HITCHER", I was hoping for a real thriller, a joy ride of some suspense intensely centered around some real scenes of action and personal pain with what people go through in these situations. But all I was left with was watching a very predictable film with unrealistic and comical deliveries of farce. I found myself laughing at some of the hit and run scenes. Honestly I thought that when professionals created movies their would be a sense of wonder and amazement instead of quick and eye-rolling stupidity. I think the next time they let the same writer and director match up and do another movie they should just call it "TRASH". HIGHWAYMEN, all i can say is, "take the bus".
Just the way I like my movies; doesn't mess around getting to what the story is all about and because it's only 72 min's, you don't have to wait an eternity for plot resolution to occur. You are launched into the movie headlong by the opening scene. Ends, as is usual with many American movies, with the obligatory mass of police vehicles & ambulances all parked with their lights flashing. It would be interesting to compile a list of how many movies end with such a scene and pan out to finish the film. Getting a bit tired I would have thought.A short, sharp, dramatic, emotion evoking ride.
