Nice effects though.
A different way of telling a story
It’s an especially fun movie from a director and cast who are clearly having a good time allowing themselves to let loose.
There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
This is bad science fiction. The aliens were the only interesting thing about this movie. The rest of the movie is filled with poor plot twists and annoying characters who serve as a reminder of how easy this world would be to conquer. The human females are relegated to the first half of the film, holding hands and convincing each other that 'you can make it', even as the other one is giving up. The story line is weak. The accents are bad. The acting is sophomoric. I cannot remember the last movie where people fell down so many times just to drive the plot. This movie was a total waste of time, even if it was free to watch. I am so glad that half the world was destroyed, but the Russians were able to fix the girl's phone, so she could phone home and get an answer. What are the odds?
Don't get me wrong, the story line was very interesting and something you don't see with every apocalyptic movie. I went into this movie with high expectations set from watching the trailer, only to be somewhat disappointed halfway through. The monsters/aliens whatever you want to call them are extremely intimidating at first, but only in the beginning can you actually feel any sort of terror from these things. Once they are revealed behind their invisible shield, it's almost laughable to see such a bad cgi with the faces. You would think that a movie with such great quality when portraying death scenes would spend a little more time on the aliens themselves. The actors felt too fake, and I found myself scoffing at how many of the main 'group' we see die only because it was so expected. The movie was okay, but I'm not going to bring it down completely because of a few minor things that could of helped it in the long run.I would still watch this movie again, however, I would warn people that the 'hype' from the trailer is not at all like the movie.
There are some films (ala Snakes on a Place, Cowboys and Aliens etc) where you really should ask yourself whether you think you will enjoy them. Granted, the Darkest Hour's titles isn't as big a give away to the film's content, but, judging by the amount of negativity surrounding the film, I would strongly advice anyone contemplating watching it to locate its trailer on the internet before viewing.Basically, it's an 'alien invasion' movie (albeit set in Russia, but don't worry, everyone kindly speaks perfect English so there's no need for subtitles). Some nasty ol' monsters descend from the sky and start murdering the population. Our plucky American heroes must therefore run and fight back to survive.Perhaps the closest film already out there like this is Skyline (also critically mauled), however I found its plot similar to 28 Days Later (although with aliens instead of the 'infected').This movie is no masterpiece. There's not an awful lot of scope with the script to allow the actors much in the way of anything other than filling their roles, let alone character development. The special effects are low-budget (by today's standards), but acceptable for what's required. If you enjoy effectively a B-movie with a bit of chase and action thrown in, give it a shot, you might enjoy it (but my initial advice still stands: check out the trailer, if you think it might be for you, then it probably is).
Even though this movie isn't "something special", for me, a big fan of alien invasions and stuff like that, it wasn't bad. Finally something new. A fresh idea that could have been better.Completely cold, dull and with a weak plot, its one of the movies which you'll watch and you won't care which character is going to die.It was still exciting at the times and ending is great, it leaves space for a sequel which they probably won't make.If you are a fan of alien invasions, weak plots and your standards for sci-fi movies are low then you might even enjoy it... Otherwise don't bother with it.
