No one is safe when seemingly random killings emerge as a deadly pattern intended to usher in the end of the world. A murder victim with the same DNA as Christ. A serial killer mimicking the deaths of the 12 Apostles. Inspector Niemans and a young, rebellious detective team up with a beautiful expert in religion to crack the case before their elusive suspect completes the cycle of terror, paving the way to an even bigger bloody catastrophe.

That was an excellent one.
Please don't spend money on this.
Just what I expected
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
I rate this a SEVEN because the film is highly entertaining. The apartment fight scene with Reda is fantastic, and the mood of the film is somber. One feels drawn into the mystery of where it is going. But the reviewer on the main page has truly nailed the flaws of this film. What is this demonizing of religion all about? The Catholic Church has a far greater role in French society than in the US, and therefore appears more prominently in this film than in say an American flavor of it. In America, the hooded priest hooligans/angels of death would have been laughable. The attention paid to the Jesus-look-alike in the direction of the film is clearly reverential, to add to the legend of the "last days" theme. But this handling truly reveals a deep divide between American and French audiences. Then appears the sinister German relic in Christopher Lee, survivor of WWII, and even the Maginot line must echo they echo of German/French antipathy. He holds a secret in the mysterious order; so, subliminal message, the Catholic Church is co-opted by Nazis--the Vatican could NOT have been pleased. As the reviewer on the main page notes, the ending is outright theft of concept from Indiana Jones. The first Crimson Rivers ends in a muddled pool of pre-sentient Christian/Catholic dogma; Empire of the Wolves, while very good, refuses to take on the real Turkish threat, but instead pursues "right wing Turks" who trade in women, drugs, and train terrorists--right and left wing Turks? Hello, Islamists, which are they? The only French Reno film I have seen that is devoid of this French PC/Religious fear/animus is WASABI. Wasabi is a wonderfully funny film, and well worth seeing.Angels of the Apolcalypse is very entertaining, but comes whimpering to fin.
First movie, "Rivières pourpres, Les", was a big hit of French and European cinematography because it proved that Europeans are capable of making interesting thrillers, just like Americans, if you give them enough money to do it. Here in second part money is the only thing that stayed. There is no plot that can keep us interested all the time and certainly Benoît Magimel couldn't match with Vincent Cassel although I don't have nothing against Magimel. The whole plot of the movie isn't that convincing and chase scenes between Reda and monk are just too much. Like you're watching a longer version of that scene from "Casino Royal" when they are jumping all around in the air. What I liked is some directing parts from Olivier Dahan ("Môme, La"), legendary Jean Reno as always and the religious questions that I like in movies. I recommend you to watch first movie and the second one but only as mindless action flick. To get something more watch "The Ninth Gate" from Polanski with Depp or similar movies. For this "Rivières pourpres, Les" I give 5/10.
Well this movie urged me to vote(10) and write comments to it! I am a great movie fan, in particular horror movies and detectives, one of my favorites is se7en.This movie leaves the viewer guessing for a long time about the bad guys, what are they? Well I will not spoil it for ya(too much) but there is an explanation for everything! I really loved this french movie(English spoken). If you can go and see/buy it, I liked it more than the first one and even more than a lot of other movies. It has some great chases and unsuspected action.Really this movie will be liked by horror fans as well as action fans.
Pretty dreadful franchisy sequel. Apart from Dahan's (French) meditative camera-work inbetween stock action filming there's absolutely nothing original about this film at all. To name all the contrivances and their lineage would be as boring as the film itself: suffice to say that if you've seen Bond, Indiana Jones and The.., Seven and even The Matrix you've probably covered most of this.Of the cast, Magimel has the 'cute' of Cassel (from the first) but not his charisma. Reno is the one holding it together, although his ennui is rather more phoned-in for this one. And simply putting Christopher Lee in a film - doing his sect-leader yet again - does not rubber-stamp it with integrity (he's left out to dry almost as much as the redundant chick-interest, Natta).I did, however, enjoy an unwittingly (?) postmodern thrill-sequence set in the supermarket. If only there were more of this invention 3/10
