Really Surprised!
Good concept, poorly executed.
Tells a fascinating and unsettling true story, and does so well, without pretending to have all the answers.
Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
I was just surfing the web and found this movie and I soon rented it on my pad for the weekend. I finished it today, and I thought "Oh, my God!" In a GOOD way! What I MAINLY liked about this movie is the actual storyline. I prefer a Mystery/Horror movie to a Horror/Horror movie. It actually DID convince me to be scared of my dentist, but I laughed at myself after that. I did have a book with my while I watched it so that I could cover up any shots that were TOO gore. By gore, I mean close-ups of bloody mouths, such as when Dr. Feinstone stabs Jodi in the gum and blood sprays everywhere, and we see Brooke with her tongue cut out. AND when he 'tortures' Mr. Goldblum. And in one scene, Dr. Feinstone strangles Jessica to death and gave Karan a needle, and the air bubble travels to her brain and kills her. I had to cover the screen for THAT, too. There's also a lot of swearing in this movie, "Whore" is used loads, so is "Shit" and "Fucking". Well, Sarah reminds me of myself, the fact that she had her braces off. I got MINE off a month ago and NOW a have a plate.Overall, FOR CHILDREN? Almost CERTAINLY not. The VERY STRONG gore and violent scenes are VERY LIKELY to scare children and possibly some teenagers.
Rich, fraudulent, jealous, mentally ill and severely mysophobic dentist creates a mini-Armageddon for his wife, the pool guy, staff and clients (and a neighborhood dog). Yuzna is no great storyteller, but he knows the tricks in the (horrorfilm) book and uses them well, and even the build-up is pretty okay.It all happens in the course of just two days (mostly at his practice), and the viewer doesn't get to see any pre-history. This man is simply not well, and seeing his wife cheat on him with the pool guy turns him into a monster. Although he is just fantasizing at first, and really trying to keep it together, you know: don't get mad, get even. To no avail...The biggest plus is all the (cheesy) horror(gore) that makes several individual scenes stand out. The second biggest plus is Bernsen, who portrays quite a decent (ha ha) nasty psycho.
Mediocre horror movie that tries to make one chuckle and make you cringe at the same time. Unfortunately, it made me cringe a couple of times, but not really chuckle as the humor falls flat for the most part. The movie is not really scary either, the only thing about this movie that really made me cringe was the teeth pulling stuff in it, and that would make me cringe in a documentary too. However, it passed the time and it had a somewhat good acting by Corbin Berson as the dentist who in the blink of an eye snaps and starts out just doing rather inappropriate things like getting fresh with a patient who is under gas, but soon turns to murder and graphic teeth pulling as he goes further and further down the path of madness. People of course begin to suspect his bad behavior, but they are usually one step behind the crazed dentist. If they had not tried so hard to interject humor into this one and done a few more gruesome things this one may have scored more points with me. Still, I think as gruesome as tooth pulling is, I think there is just to limited a scope for a movie so it gets stretched thin and unnecessary plot points are introduced. Sadly, they thought this concept could be stretched into another movie and thus the Dentist II would be born.
Well, I do like the gore in this movie - it is genuingly unsetteling. Anyone that's been to the dentist will know why. The story really isn't that bad, Corbin Bersen's character's motivations do make a lot more sense than in most horror movies.I've seen worse acting, directing, script, etc. but at the end of the day this is still a bad horror movie. So it comes down to if you enjoy that type of thing or not. I tried to watch the sequel, but it was exactly, exactly the same thing as this movie. Just keep in mind if you enjoy people getting tortured at the dentist, then this is the movie for you!
