It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.

"Aschenputtel" is a German movie that was made for the holidays 2011, so this one is already over five years old now. It is one of many fairy tale adaptations that came out here in Germany and were made for the small screen, usually for either ARD or ZDF. And the popularity of these can also be seen through the cast. Tezel, Auer, Bartholomäi, Brüggemann, Roggan and Krassnitzer are all performers that also show up on the big screen for other prestigious projects. Here they give us their take on the Brothers Grimm tale, one that has been adapted under the name of Cinderella many many times. The director is Uwe Janson and the adaptation was written by David Ungureit, both of them pretty experienced as well. So it all sounded promising and actually audiences do not get disappointed. The performances are good and as the script stays relatively close to the Grimm ideas, the plot and story are also successful. Sure there are better and worse performances in here (I did not really like the Prince for example), but that's the case for every film. Overall, it is very satisfying and Tezel does a good job with the title character. I'd also be interested in Brüggemann in the main role as I quite like her and I am sure she would have made it work as well, even if in a completely different manner than Tezel. Pheline Roggan is probably among the lesser known cast members, but she is very good playing the evil stepsister and certainly a contender for the film's MVP. The movie runs for under an hour as these fairy tale films frequently do, but that's perfectly fine as it keeps it also pretty essential and strong in terms of focus. I enjoyed it and give it a thumbs-up. Worth checking out.
