Yawn. Poorly Filmed Snooze Fest.
Good movie but grossly overrated
Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.
It's a mild crowd pleaser for people who are exhausted by blockbusters.
Highway is a good honest offbeat movie by Imtiaz Ali, about a kidnapped girl.PROS of Highway1 - Melodious AR Rahman compositions 2 - Fine acting by Alia Bhat (her cuteness adds to the sensitivity of her character and how can I forget the climax in which she takes out all her stifled frustration on her family members) 3 - Fine acting by Randeep Hooda 4 - Scenes of Mother Nature in all its glory (lush green field, majestic snow-capped mountains of Himalaya and the tumbling roar of the river flowing out of the mountain) 5 - The Stockholm Syndrome (displayed by Alia)CONS of Highway1 - The 'dehati' accent of Randeep is unintelligible 2 - The shooting down of Randeep was gross (How can police shoot down someone without any warning and provocation?) 3 - The flashbacks of Randeep life is unnecessary (it does not contribute to the gravity of the situation or plot) 4 - The teary acting of Randeep outside his new house while Alia is cooking food, looks "forced" (it should have been done softly and slowly so that you can connect with his state-of-mind)5 - The Stockholm Syndrome is shown in a sudden, unrealistic manner which just did not appeal at all Imtiaz Ali is one of the few directors of meaningful, thoughtful films we've in India. Even in the case of a commercial film like Jab We Meet, he handled it with sincerity and maturity (as opposed to the melodrama and cacophany that Rohit Shetty indulges in).
I was starting to think commercial cinema had ensnared Imtiaz Ali in its tempting web with the quality of his movies progressively declining each time. However, this has reaffirmed his stature as a once promising film maker. A story of suppressed sadness and rage and a quietly building crescendo of emotions, the unlikely pairing of Alia Bhatt's spoilt rich girl on the eve of her wedding, and her would be kidnapper, Randeep Hooda works magic as they traverse a route on some even more magical landscapes. As she struggles with her long suppressed inner demons and discovers a freedom she hadn't ever experienced before with her captor, Alia Bhatt is the heart and soul of this movie. Her emotional outburst towards the end of the film was one of the best pieces of acting I've seen from a Bollywood actress in recent times and gripped me enough to not lift my eyes from the screen.
By far the best Bollywood movie I have seen in recent times, the lead actress Alia Bhatt eloquently portrays the girl from the rich upper cast family who lived a gated community life totally veiled from the utter realities of life in India, suddenly kidnapped Ironically feels never freer in her life. Along the way she never wants to return to her real life which was full of shallowness. She breaks down and reveals her not too dandy life as a child who was molested by family and hushed by family to protect the family honor. Later the mechanization of police institutions and family connections culminates in sniper shot killing of the ring lead man who took her, of- course an unprovoked shot, but a man deemed unworthy require no trail.
A Cult Classic ..... I couldn't control myself in writing a review for this movie....I loved it so much that I wrote my first review....Here it goes....Initially I hesitated to watch this movie due to mixed reviews it received .... but l regret it now after watching this movie few days ago ..... How did I kept this cult classic movie aside ..... Anyways better late than never..... First thing this is very underrated movie ..... I follow Rajeev masand's ratings on a movie , he gave 2/5 . But after watching this movie I thought why did he rated this movie very low?. May be his expectectations were high after Rockstar. May be in theaters it looked like being dragged .....but on DVD it was not like that ...... You can take 'Swades' , it might be very long while watching in theaters , but you can see what a cult following it has got after its release in Digital formats. So is the case with Highway.... I liked the screenplay very much .... very natural . Many people thought why Alai Bhatt suddenly changes her mind. Well in the song 'Tu kuja' she realizes where is her life going ,while looking at the stars (lyrics goes like....main kahan kahan ...main kahan kahan). That is the moment where her expressions changes instantaneously ( i saw at least 10 ten times that scene ..... Wonderful change of expression by Alia Bhatt ) and she decides to come back to Randeep Hooda...... I hope people understand why she changes .As opposed to Masand , I wanted the second half to be much longer . It was the second half that makes this movie a classic. The chemistry and love between them was so pure and they will melt your heart for sure .....About songs A R Rahman is at his best ..... The music drives the movie . Initially I didn't like 'To kuja' and Pattaka Guddi ( Male Version ) ..... But now after watching this movie , I fell in love with themDirection is great , Acting is top notch ... I think this is Alia Bhatt's best performance till date , which won her Best Actress (Critics) at Filmfare awards this year. Randeep Hooda was at his best. Cinematography was excellent.Do not miss this Classic Movie , very rare to find in Indian movies which is filled with no brainer movies.....such a beauty this movie really is ..... Don't miss this you will regret it just like me. Now this is in my DVD collection .
