Best movie of this year hands down!
A Masterpiece!
The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
After a success of "Bombay," Mani Ratnam came with "Dil Se..." People had a lot of expectation with the film watching its promos. But the film wasn't accepted by the viewers and was a flop. Hadn't watched the movie till date reading the rave reviews it got at the time. Well, after watching the whole movie, I just questioned myself what was really in the film to like about. The story was just not happening, performances were not to the mark, and the end just stretched on and on; and what I felt of the movie was utterly unconvincing and boring.Shahrukh falling for Manisha Koirala and pursuing her even after her rejection is just not convincing. Mani Ratnam had a special purpose in "Bombay" whereas "Dil Se" seem to be misleading patronizing terrorism. The film couldn't be a political drama nor a romantic movie. The film refers no historical event for which it remains meaningless. Performance wise, Shahrukh makes a routine role; and nowhere he comes out of his regular image. Manisha Koirala fails to impress this time, and Priety Zinta makes her debut in a slight role and fulfils a bit of glamour. The only saving grace of the movie is the big canvass of the movie including the nice photography and AR Rehman's stunning music and background score. Just like Subash Ghai's "Kroadhi" or Yash Chopra's "Vijay," "Dil Se" is a backfire of a distinguished film maker due to a poor script.Rating: 1 star out of 4
The movie begins at a north eastern railway station in India where on a stormy night Amar(Shah Rukh Khan) meets a beautiful young woman : Manisha Koirala. Thus begins the saga of a beautifully picturized tale full of suspense and uncertainty .Mani Ratnam , as always the genius storyteller he is , keeps us under his spell for the entire time. Shah Rukh Khan does a brilliant job as a Radio Jockey for the All India Radio while Manisha Koirala plays her part in a quite challenging role as a motivated but love struck suicide bomber . Preity Zinta is lovable as a young adult with her marriage round the corner to Amar. She is playfully meek and absolutely fits into the role of an about to be married young girl .Mani Ratnam through his 'gem' has also tried to put light onto the grim and often neglected scenario in the North East where Rebels are trying to get for their region what they deserve . Being cut off from the mainland and being quite a distance from the National Capital seems to have made the government officials oblivious to the plight of the citizens there with people having far less resources and opportunities than mainland India.A R Rahman's music is mesmerizing with Lata Mangeshkar stealing the show with her masterpiece "Jiya Jale" and Sukhwinder Singh with the famous train song "Chhaiya Chhaiya" being totally out of the world. It concludes in a melodramatic fashion , this film has all that brings out all the emotions from the viewer . A definite must watch for one and all.
I think this movie failed on several counts: first of all, the protagonists were thoroughly unlikeable characters. I found SRK to be obsessive and creepy when it came to the girl, and completely underdeveloped when it came to his job and politics. If he was supposed to represent the opinions of mainstream India about ethnic uprisings, I have no idea what those opinions are. He was underdeveloped, and the motivations of his love interest were equally obscured.Even beyond having weak story and characterizations, this movie could have been saved by having something interesting to say. Terrorism is obviously a very multi-faceted subject, and I have no idea what this movie was trying to say about it. Something that passed for a point was quite literally blown up by melodrama in the end. What saves the movie are visuals and music. The settings are quite stunning and there are even some fine supporting performances. Obviously the music is catchy.
This movie was very good the two characters who love each other do so under difficult circumstances a story about a radio executive Amarkanth Verma who meets a beautiful revolutionary Meghna both Sharukh Khan and Manisha Koirala play their roles wonderfully Sharukh Khan's character really pursues this woman and the way he deeply feels about her she on the other hand is to commit a deadly mission but she also deeply deeply loves him a story of love and death the song Ae Ajnabi couldn't portray both characters feelings any stornger nonetheless it is a good movie and for those people who say it is confusing there is really nothing confusing about Dil Se.
