Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
Classic black and white B movie silliness. Pay attention to the "monster" - the Solorite prisoner. That's Richard Kiel, better known as Jaws, and star of many wonderful films. The film begins with an annoying narration. In the first 'action' scene, we are introduced to two characters by literally introducing them. It's on par with that short story we wrote in third grade. Then those two guys get blown out of the sky by an asteroid. After that, the rest of the film is a dramatic improvement. It appears to have been filmed in one small studio with a minimum of sets, and virtually no special effects. Only a kid at heart who loves theater and science fiction would appreciate this small 'gem.' One has to think of it more as civic theater than as a movie production. Phantom Planet took its inspiration from early 20th century pulp fiction and a lot of 'Tarzan' but it managed to fail utterly.
It took about 20 minutes of boring bits to get to the asteroid and a little bit interesting stuff. It's not bad for a 1950s 5 Sci-Fi, not a good film but not too bad either. It's about an astronaut who sent into space and his ship is drawn to the asteroid by it's gravitational pull. His ship lands, he steps out looks around and falls over... then he shrinks. He is captured by the small people that lives on the asteroid, he's put to trial then let go. He is told that if he gets back to Earth he would immediately grow back to normal size but he can never leave the asteroid anyway. The men in the film must have gone to John Wayne's school of acting because they sure seem to try to talk like John Wayne. LOL.The film is not as bad as I thought it was going to be. It's a little bit interesting, mostly drab but watchable (barely).3.5/10
I saw this film on the show, Mystery Science Theater 3000. Had I not seen the film on that show, I probably would have never viewed it as I cannot recall ever seeing it on television. Not the best science fiction film ever, but not totally horrible...just bad. It also would have been kind of boring without the riffing of MST3K because it is a film that features a lot of talking, more talking and even more talking. In between though, you do get some okay effects that make things look small and large, a few action scenes and Richard Kiel as the really tall alien guy...a role that he would do on more than a couple of occasions. The story has a team of two astronauts flying through space and they encounter something. There is a base on the moon that sends Frank Chapman and his amazing copilot who talks about the good and the beautiful. They end up having a problem and the guy who talks about the good and beautiful kind of floats off while Frank ends up landing on an asteroid that looks just like a fried piece of chicken with absolutely nowhere to land on it. No place on it certainly looks like the place Frank lands and immediately stumbles and falls down at. Meanwhile, the moon plans to send out yet another two team into space to rescue the rescue team. One must wonder, when would they have stopped if that rescue team had failed? Well, Frank ends up shrinking down in size and having an adventure among the citizens of this phantom chicken...I mean planet. A place that if you attack one of their own they make you a citizen and give you your choice of women, but if you have a disagreement you must fight to the death! So Frank tries to find his way home, but also finds the love of his life and becomes friends with the citizens of this phantom planet. This made for a funny episode of MST3K...it is definitely a film though that I would not want to see without their assistance. It is not totally horrible, not like Monster A-Go-Go, but it is not what I would call a good film either. Too many idiotic plot points in this one and just so much talking. Thankfully, the gang of MST3K are able to turn this long sessions into rather funny moments. So I did not care for the movie as a whole. Not super terrible, but it just a film that could have had more to it than it did. It had several scenes that were simply filler as there was not really a need for two flashback scenes, they literally flashback to a scene that happened less than two minutes prior at one point. You would see a rather good set piece featuring the large spacesuit, but then all you would see is this super advanced people living in the most barren planet possible. Seriously, you cannot create such scientific achievements while sleeping on a slab!
I must admit that I did not watched an old Sci-Fi movie since long time, so, maybe I'm not what they call an expert in classical movies. I am the child of my times, so I'm used with the new wave of Sci-Fi movies, full of action and special effects.Still I enjoyed this classic film and I think is worth viewing. You can find a bit of everything in this movie. The dream of nuclear power as fuel for rockets. Some kind of Gulliver among the people of Liliput. The highly advanced civilization who gives up to the comfort of technology (and all the dangers that comes with it) to live a simple "primitive" life. A touch of Ancient Greek fashion style in the dress models of the main feminine characters. An echo of Feminism: female juries wearing short dresses. And at the end, the somehow blurred line between what is real and what is not.The "special effects" and the general style reminds me of Star Trek TOS. And just like in Star Trek, the monster aliens look unconvincing. But we should admit that the creators of this movie did their best for that time. I could point out some goofs, but I think we should show some understanding and just enjoy this classic!
