Best movie ever!
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
This movie seems to be getting bad reviews and I think if you watch it expecting stellar acting then I can sort of understand the less than great reviews. However, I don't think the actors were all that bad and the special effects were actually far better than I expected. I've seen a lot of horror/science fiction films with more well known actors that were far worse than this film had to offer. I do not want to put any spoilers in here so I'll just say that I was definitely entertained and actually on the edge of my seat during the last twenty minutes or so. The special effects were as I said very, very good. If you are looking for a film with a well thought out plot and original story, don't bother watching this. If you are looking for a film to pass some time and be entertained by however, give this one a shot.
Everything that needs to be said about this movie has been said in nearly all of the other reviews, so I won't bore you with details explaining how bad it is.The only good thing about this flick is that it moves the Troma movies (The Toxic Avenger, Class of Nuke 'Em High, Surf Nazis Must Die, etc) up a few notches from their celebrated 'Z class' status. At least Troma know they make bad films and revel in the fact.I'm glad I didn't pay to watch The Blackout, as I would hate to think of even one cent of my hard earned money going to the makers of this abomination.I think this movie gave me cancer when I watched it.
To be fair the premise of the movie is a good one, they (the actors) just do not do it justice. They never explain where or how these critters came about nor why they have not attacked before now. The monsters are completely unbelievable as no living thing could exist with that many teeth in its mouth. Some of the scenes were so dark you could barely see what was going on. The actors are fake and you really start cheering for them to be killed. In some scenes you can actually see the reflection of the lights from the cameras in the eyes of the actors and in others you can see them looking quickly off screen to get their cues. I tried to be fair and give it a chance, but it was too hard. So if you want to waste some time, then this is a good film for you to see as it actually wastes the time you watched it, just don't ask for it back.
This is the movie I have been waiting for - something a bit off the beaten plot formula, with a fresh take on deadly creatures. For the gore-hounds, there are plenty of kills, and some unique ones to boot! From beginning to end, I had no idea what was coming next, and each corner the storyline took you around brought another layer of depth that made you want to know more, more, more. I think I'd actually really truly enjoy a sequel. Now, go see the film... or keep reading if you don't mind a few spoilers. **SPOILER ALERT** I thought the entire concept of a whole separate ecosystem that developed obviously deep beneath the earth's crust fascinating. And that one concept was deftly woven throughout the film. The actors, while not exactly dishing out award winning performances on Oscar night, still lent good and genuine reactions when coming face to face with unworldly and possibly ungodly creatures - which I think about 9.9 times out of 10 ended quite poorly for the human...The film does make you consider another concept entirely of an apocalyptic end to the earth, depends on your views on religion and prophecy. But, all in all, this film is extremely worth the watch. Bravo to writer, director, actors, make-up and effects artists - it was a wonderful blending of talents and vision that I will be seeing again and recommending to family and friends. I am now going to add glow-sticks to my Emergency Disaster End of the World Kit.
