Highly Overrated But Still Good
If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.
Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
This movie is a pseudo biographical of Jet Li's early developement. But the real meat of the movie is showing off some really impressive Shaolin training techniques. Like standing on one finger, training the neck to not only be able to break sticks, but to keep a spear from penetrating. There is very little combat fight scenes, but to see the real techniques that are the basis of the cinematic arts is amazing. Some of the footage is apparently of techniques that have never before been demonstrated outside Shaolin. Very impressive and worth watching.
