Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
It's an amazing and heartbreaking story.
It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
Blistering performances.
Jackie Chan directs this film in which he plays a policeman who, at the film's start, is part of a massive raid that captures a major crime lord. The crime lord's secretary (Brigitte Lin) will be forced to testify against her boss, so the police have Jackie keep watch over her until the trial. That doesn't sit well with Jackie's girlfriend (Maggie Cheung). What seems like a cute romantic comedy gets a bit darker as the crime lord's henchmen set out to kill both Brigitte and Jackie. There are so many amazing action set-pieces that it's hard to pick which is the best, from cars driving full-throttle downhill through the middle of a shanty town, to Jackie using an umbrella to hang on to the outside of a double-decker bus driving at full speed, to bone-crunching jumps and falls, and a huge action sequence inside a shopping mall.If the overall story had been a bit more engaging, this might have gone down as one of my all-time action faves. As it is, it's highly recommended for action fans or those who want to know why Jackie Chan spent two decades as one of the world's biggest superstars. This was a huge commercial hit all over Asia, and won multiple awards, making it one of the premiere films in Jackie Chan's career. It has spawned multiple sequels.
Police Story is a quintessential landmark in Jackie Chan's filmography. The film is a perfect showcase for his immense talent, that makes him one of the greatest physical performers that has ever graced the silver screen. The plot of the film is fairly simple, Jackie is a police officer tasked with protecting a key witness from a mob boss, and his endless supply of henchmen. The script is essentially there to serve the action whilst keeping things moving at a brisk pace, which it does effortlessly. The main attraction of this film is obviously going to be the incredible action set-pieces, as-well as the astonishing stunt-work, which holds up incredibly well. The film features stunt-work that is absolutely breathtaking to witness, of which I can only commend Jackie and his team for what they have achieved. The sheer dedication to get every set-piece crafted to perfection is phenomenal. (And finally after decades Jackie has earned himself an honorary Oscar and long overdue recognition from the Academy Awards.)Police Story is a rip-roaring action masterclass, that also features scenes that are genuinely hilarious. The film opens up with an incredible bus chase and manages to maintain it's high-calibre intensity all the way though till the films incredible climax.
Jackie Chan's film history is predominantly home based in Hong Kong and is a different affair to his Hollywood films which to be fair have fared well against others of similar genres. His work is magnificent, the story-line is simple and its good, clean wholesome entertainment interspersed with an excellent script, comedy and those stunts from the man himself. It's a must see for anyone of all ages in a time when Hollywood began to spiral into a nose dive with Terminators, Predators and a general decline of cinematic entertainment, in the true definition of entertainment. If you've never seen films from around further afield, Jackie will be the best tour guide you'd need.
Seriously, this movie is hard to match in terms of action and martial arts. It is hard for me to decide which one I like more 'Police Story' or 'Project A'. They're both one of the greatest action movies. Anyway, Jackie Chan was setting standards in the early 80's for his output of films and a lot of studios were copying what he was doing. He was upset about it which lead to the movie having the title 'Police Story'. Like most of Jackie Chan's movies 'Police Story' has a simple but effective plot (because the movie is quite focused on the plot) and a simple story. But since the movie doesn't spend too much time on fooling around it is great in my opinion. It has humorous parts and I honestly thought they were out of place but they didn't bother me so I feel they're fine. I also honestly felt the humour here wasn't up to Jackie's standard but that's just me. There isn't some super bad guy here like a usual Jackie movie but I felt that made the movie that much more effective since it gave the movie more of a realistic feeling, thus making the characters seem more human. I feel it gave the movie an extra edge and more punching power. The acting is pretty good as usual with fast dialogs to go a bit faster into the action. Which is in my opinion one of the great things about this movie. I often start to get bored when there is too much dialog in a movie. It even has stunts that many movies will not be able to match for example the squatter village destruction. That scene gives me chills. Even Jackie says it is the best in his movies. Not to mention what happened in the mall at the climax of the movie. As usual 'Police Story' has a razor sharp editing with pin point accuracy. I've always had great respect for the editing in Jackie Chan's movies. Also something that many editors can not match. As usual, Jackie worked his butt off in this movie to create martial arts fights that he feel works for him. The climax at the mall has been matched by only a handful of movies in terms of tension, excitement and choreography. I feel exhausted each time after the climax, like as if I was in a fight. I honestly feel only a handful (if not less) have matched the movie in terms of action and martial arts choreography. I feel this movie will age well and I still love it as much as I loved it when I watched it the first time.9/10
