In 2005, Michael Palin set out to unlock the mysteries and find out about the background and life of Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi. Hammershøi painted around the start of the 20th century and many of his pictures have a distinct coolness and distance about them. Palin, wanting to know of his inspirations and the reason for these mystical pictures, starts his search in Hayward Gallery in London, goes to Amsterdam and finally the painters home town, Copenhagen (Denmark).

Excellent but underrated film
Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
This programme was done brilliantly well. I loved the woman playing the piano at the beginning I found Micheal Palin's voice as he described some of Hammersoi's paintings haunting and stuck in my mind. I must say I felt that I wanted to know more after the programme finished. As I watched this programme I felt I got into it more and more. It was wonderfully directed by Eleanor Yule and produced by Mahri McNeal. I thought all the music was beautifully chosen and perfect for the mellow mood of the show. Palin described the atmosphere of the places he visited so well I felt I was in the room with him. Watching it makes me want to know even more about him. Wonderfully made show recommend to all audiences.
