Thanks for the memories!
It's fun, it's light, [but] it has a hard time when its tries to get heavy.
it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.
This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.
Making semi-pornographic horror movies in Mumbai in the 1980s was apparently not easy: you needed to pay the police to turn a blind eye, and your available sources of finance weren't necessarily so benign either. 'Miss Lovely' tells the story of two brothers caught up in the industry, one of whom makes two linked errors: he falls in love, and he begins to dream of making a genuinely romantic film with the woman he's fallen for. It sounds like it could be a good film, but mainly, I found it confusing and chaotic - in part, this is intentional (as the world portrayed is also confusing and chaotic), but the lack of clarity and detail in the plotting is ultimately off-putting, and the ending a little abrupt and unfounded. The subject remains promising; but awaits a better treatment.
Miss Lovely is very different. It takes you to the world never seen before. It engages you, moves you and makes you think. Like Niharika said, you can't forget this film if you've seen with an open mind.Miss lovely is located in mid 80's. It's about two brothers, Vicky Duggal and Sonu duggal who make sex-horror films. They have very different personalities though. There comes a struggling actress, Pinky in their lives. The movie is all about ehat happens next. The C-grade world is captured just perfectly in this film. The scenes, parties and all other things look very real. Performances are raw. And very realistic. You can feel the same as character on the screen is feeling. Nawazuddin is just brilliant. Anil, Niharika, Zeena, Menaka and other actors have done a splendid work too.The direction, the cinematography and the narrative style is very experimental. Must watch for cinema lovers. A movie of this uniqueness is not very often made.
Bollywood movies are generally based on fantasy and imagination where the audience is made to relate with the characters on screen. Miss Lovely adopts a different approach. It opens a viewer's eye to the reality and familiarizes them with the characters around them. The movie has penetrating dialogues and harsh naked characters. Nawaz as the character 'Sonu' was awesome. The movie was brilliant in first half. One needs to watch this movie carefully as there are many plots and characters, almost like a novel, and it can get confusing sometimes. On second viewing though, it's very clear and you understand much of what is going on under the surface.
Nawaz has been portrayed in many forms as an actor and his flexibility to melt into the character's soul is what defines him as a true performer. This was his first lead role and what a role it is! He is Sonu Duggal for real and Miss Lovely is his most incredible performance. Directed by Ashim Ahluwalia who is well known for his totally unconventional filmmaking style, this film takes you back to days when a pornographic portrayal of women was the sole reason a huge lot went to the theaters. A lot of single screen theaters such as Chandan cinema in Mumbai owe their fame and share of spotlight to the C- Grade film industry. The director has gone deep into those roots and tried to portray the dirty truth that runs behind the camera in such films. The film has a very new style and is totally different from typically filmy Indian fare. It's a dark film but it stays with you for a very long time after you have left the cinema.
