In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
I finally saw this film last night after a friend from Arizona sent it to us, and I have to say I was quite shocked. It was a lot more downbeat than I was expecting. The tension was almost relentless, and we enjoyed constantly changing our minds as to the killer's identity. All in all it was quite intense and slightly uncomfortable. It attempted, fairly successfully, to question how faith can exist in times of horror and crisis, but it was still an unusual juxtaposition of the two. My wife commented that she didn't think there should have been so much emphasis on religion in a film like this. I was surprised that you're left feeling sad at the end of the film rather than uplifted, which is what you would expect from the director of God's Army. I'm glad though that he tried to do something different as it would have been very easy for him to just repeat the successful formula he had used in his first film, and I'm still looking forward to his next effort, Joseph the Prophet.
This is not a bad film in spite of having to endure the LDS propaganda. I suppose that having the film set in Utah among the Mormons does add something that makes it a unique mystery. What really bothered me about the film, though, was the sheriff's actions in having all the houses in Brigham searched. What was he thinking? It doesn't matter what his motives were. This was a blatant violation of the Bill of Rights (Fourth Amendment), the basis of our freedom. Poor Steve. Not only can illegal searches result in humiliation, but they can also be used to suppress opposition to those in authority. Surely, that doesn't happen in small communities in Utah.
Brigham City was a good movie, with great acting. The actors made that movie look like it was real. They should have had it come to the east coast, because I am originally from Pennsylvania, and the only Mormon movies that came out there were "God's Army" and "Other Side of Heaven." I recommend you show Brigham City to your friends that aren't Mormon, they should enjoy it. It's also a perfect movie to watch late at night, the movie is an action movie and scary. It's about some people being murdered in Brigham City Utah, and two cops played as Richard Dutcher and Matthew Brown. You don't find out who the suspect is until the end, but there didn't seem to be enough evidence that it was who it was. I tried to see if the suspects gun matched his or hers, but it didn't. When it showed the suspects gun really fast it matched the sheriff's, but I'll tell you only one person the suspect wasn't, it wasn't the sheriff. Could anyone email me and tell me some of the evidence that helps lead us to the suspect..
This independently-made film kept me fascinated long after my bedtime as I watched it on video.I thought the camera work, acting, and dialogue were excellent.Although a person could draw the conclusion that the inhabitants of fictional Brigham City are sanctimonious, close-minded people, there is no doubt about the skill of the director/producer and star Richard Dutcher of this film, a practicing Mormon himself. His performance as the widower sheriff of Brigham is nuanced and complex. He is fiercely protective of his sheltered little town--a town that until now has never known murder. It was also interesting to observe the rituals of the Mormon sabbath. Altogether, Brigham City is a welcome change from the special effects, blockbusters of recent months. People actually talk to each other. Relationships are important. The murder is solved at the conclusion. My conclusion is that Richard Dutcher's is a talent that will only get better with time. 9/10
