Good story, Not enough for a whole film
A truly unsettling little film & a classic of modern British cinema. I call it a little film because there is nothing flashy, brash or glamorous about this, its a straight forward plot, told in a straight forward way. Toby Kebbells character Anthony aside there are no likeable characters in the film, but who says there has to be? I see many reviews on this site with people complaining 'i didn't like any of the characters or care for them' but why does this always have to be the case? There are a lot of unlikeable people out there & they are portrayed nowhere better than in Dead Mans Shoes. The performances throughout are excellent, even given most are non or part time actors. Toby Kebbell though is sublime as Anthony & the level of emotion & empathy I felt for him was heartbreaking. The film though belongs to Paddy Considines Richard. The unwavering & unflinching remorseless Considine Shows us is chilling & as scary a character i've seen on film ( & he's the 'good guy'!). The scene where the local small time dealer confronts Richard in the bar & the scene where the local kingpin confronts Richard in the street are both superb, his reaction both times chilling. Nitty, gritty, funny & scary, watch it. 10/10
When I read the synopsis, I expected a classic revenge story. Boy was I wrong. This is, indeed, a tale of revenge, but it deglamorizes it and shows that it's not satisfying, and that it does not produce a sense of completeness. Revenge is dark, bitter, and can make you become the very thing you brought your revenge upon. The acting and directing is superb, and there is a surreal feel sometimes that makes the story truly universal. This could take place anywhere in the world and still bring the same message. The revenge in this movie only exposes the true nature of its perpetrator, a nature he himself is not able to live with. It ended as it was supposed to end, and I have to say this is a nearly flawless movie. Unfortunately, I think it would be hard to watch it again. Nobody likes being punched twice in the stomach.
Dead Man's shoes is nothing short of remarkable. It stands with Paddy Considine's Tyrannosaur and his new film, Journeyman, as one of the best British films of all time and as one of my personal favorite films ever. The performances are stunning, Paddy Considine is terrifying, and the direction is perfect, as is the script. 10 out of 10.
I find the movie's rating is a bit overrated on IMDb , either because there's few users rated this film , or most of the people find this movie interesting , i think the movie's plot goes slow to keep the viewer suspended and i like that , but the bad news is most of the movie was kind of boring until the final scenes where the gripping actions toke place. i believe that the screen writing was mediocre , the directing isn't clever , but not bad too , and most of the actors don't fit their roles except for "Paddy Considine" and "Toby Kebbell" as for performance , they did extremely splendid job they deserve an Oscar for it . The movie gained unsatisfactory gross , probably because Shane Meadows wasn't well renowned back then , because at time he hadn't made his successful movie "This Is England" yet . if you're into disturbing movies , this may have your liking because of its rare topic , so don't miss it .
