Good , But It Is Overrated By Some
In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
Magnus Dens (a fine and engaging performance by Leigh McCloskey) suffers troubling and nightmarish memories of his traumatic childhood. Magnus joins up with crusty scientist Dr. Paulis (nicely essayed with cranky aplomb by Burl Ives) and his hearty assistant Eric (a delightfully robust portrayal by Carl Weathers) to investigate what's been causing unexplained disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle. Meanwhile, Magnus meets and falls for the beautiful and enigmatic Jennie Haniver (bewitching Connie Selleca), who has an unusual link to what's going on in the triangle.Director Tom Kotani, working from a quirky and engrossing script by William Overgard, relates the compellingly idiosyncratic story at a hypnotically deliberate pace, makes excellent use of the breathtaking Bermuda locations, and ably crafts an eerie and poetic dreamy mood. The doomed romance between Magnus and Jennie gives this picture an unexpectedly haunting and poignant quality (Jennie's lonely plight and inability to form permanent emotional connections in particular rates as quite tragic and touching). Moreover, the filmmakers deserve extra praise for putting a welcome and refreshing emphasis on characters and atmosphere over cheap scares and fancy pyrotechnics, with the action involving a giant turtle occurring in the last third. The special effects are pretty rough around the edges, but do the trick just the same. Ruth Attaway does well as sage and superstitious local Delia while ravishing former Playboy Playmate Julie Woodson contributes a respectable turn as Eric's concerned wife Doshan. Kudos are also in order for Jeri Sopanen's striking underwater photography as well as the gently spooky and melodic score by Maury Laws. An admirably unique and affecting little item.
I fully agree. The images have stuck with me since first seeing this film at the age of 8. Powerful and haunting. How can we get a copy?! I couldn't remember the title, and have been searching or YEARS until this morning when I posted a bulletin on a movie site and someone responded with the ever elusive title, now that I know what it's called, I'm disappointed to find that a copy, CANNOT BE FOUND. I'm sort of desperate to have one. If anyone can point me in the direction of one it would be greatly appreciated! I would just like to see it again and possibly share it with my kids. I don't know WHY it has stuck with me for so long.
I was a little older, 16, when this aired. Yet still, I too have been haunted by this movie for all these years. Every few years I would dream of it yet again. I never could recall the title. I have received many concerning stares from people when I would ask, "do you know the love story movie about the super giant turtle in the bermuda triangle with the closing scene of the guy throwing his necklace into the ocean and it floating over the giant turtle?" Even 3 weeks ago, my wife threatened to have me committed for asking about the 'non-existen' movie again. Ahh, but now we live in the Internet age and FINALLY, I have found all my kindred haunted souls, and the name of the movie. I sure wish they would release this on DVD. The bootleg copies out there are pretty bad, but my soul is finally restful. I have watched it 3 times in 2 weeks now.I also would do most anything to get a copy of the full lenght release! This excellent movie came out on TV in 1978 and some networks played it several times over a period of time. Then it disappeared. If anyone knows where to find a copy online or buy any format of it please let me know. Anyone is free to email me at [email protected] for any information on finding this super movie.Carl Weathers is in this movie a does an excellent job. The girl with the turtle connection and guy who dreams about their childhood both are great. This movie has stirred up quite a commotion online with many people reporting an intensely strong desire to see the movie again coupled with chilly memories of the 'woman with green eyes' from more than 25 years ago. I suppose the feeling is just like the guy in the movie who sees his girl disappear into the sea, longing to see her again. So this movie has somehow sadly vanished and tons of people out there want to see it, rent it, buy it. Anything...just let us see it again!!! Please! But unfortunately it is as rare as finding a unicorn. If you are one of us you might also want to sign the petition for a DVD release at http://www.petitiononline.com/bermuda1/ where there is proof that more than 1,000 people really want this made for TV movie to become available.
