Waste of time
Good story, Not enough for a whole film
There are women in the film, but none has anything you could call a personality.
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
"Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na" is a nice romance...a good film for a date movie. When it begins, Jai (Imran Khan) and Aditi (Genelia D'Souza) are very good friends and have been for many years. They love to spend time with each other and although they are the opposite sex, they never have had any romantic notions towards each other. Instead, they are best friends....though folks around them assume the two will eventually marry. But when her parents propose that, the two are flabbergasted and quickly dismiss this notion. As a result, the two agree to help each other find the ideal spouse. Sadly, the girl chosen for Jai has a hellish family and the guy for Aditi turns out to be a violent jerk. Can Jai and Aditi recognize that their new partners are just not right for them and they get together themselves? In addition to this plot, Jai is torn because he'd been told his entire life that his father died, needlessly, because he was a man who despised violence and was killed when he tried, one time, to help folks work out their anger. As a result, Jai has always avoided fighting and is more of a comic figure. But, this story his mother's told him is a lie...and his father's ghost is hoping and praying that Jai learns the many ways and stands up for himself.Overall, this is a fun and sweet romance. It's also a great date movie...well worth your time and with a lot to like.
Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na' has bits of many films, most notably 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' in the main idea of two friends who are in love with each other without being aware of their own feelings. But despite that, there was something extremely awakening and refreshing in this film. Today's generation's youth was brilliantly portrayed, and the film's biggest strength was its striking simplicity and everyday reality. The simple characters, the simple dialogue, along with the natural acting, the brilliant soundtrack by A.R Rahman, and the depiction of modern-day India made for a very fine and enjoyable movie. The film does not only work because of its romantic nature, but also its striking portrayal of relationships, whether it's the one between Jai and Aditi, between Aditi and her brother, and particularly between Jai and his mother. Tyrewala skillfully captures the camaraderie of the group of friends, who are always there for each other. A.R.R brilliantly composes a soundtrack that effectively suits the film's youthful and rather melancholic mood. The songs are totally in sync with the situations and among the many good numbers, my favourite would be the title track, "Kabhi Kabhi Aditi". The background score is also quite good, with some nice tunes enhancing the narrative and the partly joyful, partly melancholic atmosphere of the film.Imran Khan makes a very good debut. The guy is simple and acts quite naturally. Genelia just has the right amount of spunk and vivacity to suit the part, and although in some portions she is a bit unnatural, she grows on you as the film goes by. It might well be because the film itself catches your interest so much that at some point nothing else matters. Ratna Pathak is excellent as the caring and loving mother. Prateik Babbar does very well, and Manjari Fadnis does her part exceedingly well. Naseeruddin Shah does a fantastic cameo, as always never fearing the possibility of ridiculing himself. Paresh Rawal is as witty and funny as always.Abbas Tyrewala's direction is fantastic and there is an impressive sensibility in the way he chooses to carry the narrative forward. The film is fast paced. Jaane Tu is not devoid of clichés. Towards the end it's far more evident because it gets dramatised, but then, Tyrewala gives it a nice touch of humour, effectively summing up this feature. JTYJN is a refreshing youthful film and it's really fun to watch. The story is nothing new, but it's injected with energy, realism and humour to create an entertaining picture that is worth revisiting.
Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na is not one of my favourite films. But make sure you watch it. Watch it for some sparkling dialogue, some fantastic music, but most of all, watch it for Imran and Genelia who conceal the film's many flaws.Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na plays out as a predictable Bollywood love story, sticking faithfully to old formulas, even culminating in that now obligatory airport climax. As far as the film's plot is concerned, there's very little that's original. Jaane Tu is not your traditional plot-driven film. It is, in fact, a film propelled by its characters and their motivations, much like Dil Chahta Hai in a sense, but without the emotional depth of that film. The characters in Jaane Tu are all cool, light and easy. So cool in fact, that they sometimes come off looking silly. Am I really being unreasonable if I can't understand why Abbas would give us such stereotypes as the gujju in the group — Jignes or the fat sulky one who can't stop whining? Is it really my fault if I'm surprised a writer of Abbas' calibre wrote that ridiculous opening scene in which a group of 20-year-olds sit around in white and deliver sentimental soliloquies for their friend's dead cat? Is it really my fault if I expected a fresh take on love, if I was hoping Jai and Aditi would realise their love for each other, but not because they realized their previous partners were such idiots? Did it have to be so simplistic; did it have to be so clichéd? Indeed it's the silliness in the writing that is my biggest grouse against this film.Silliness aside, at its heart, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na is a refreshing film. Refreshing because of its spectacular performances. Refreshing because of A R Rahman's outstanding soundtrack. Refreshing because the film's actors look like they actually enjoyed making this film. And refreshing because sitting there watching the film, you can't help feeling very old. For every Jayant Kriplani, Anooradha Patel, Rajat Kapur and Kitu Gidwani that Abbas has wasted in this film as mere caricatures, he's given us the spirited and feisty Ratna Pathak-Shah, the brooding and brilliant Prateik Babbar, the luminous Manjari Phadnis, and then those three cameos. The only good thing that comes out of that is the electrifying chemistry we get between Imran and Genelia who literally bounce off each other and keep you spellbound when they're on screen, even in the film's dullest scenes. Genelia is spontaneous and sparkling. And Imran is the best young actor we've seen on screen for months. He's unconventional and vulnerable and he knows how to use both to make a lasting impression.Imran Khan's debut is an honorable one, but far from a spectacular one. He will fit right into the shoes of younger characters that his uncle Aamir may have to pass, but as for his depth as an actor, he's probably still a few yards away from the deep end.
What else should we expect? The first promo itself said this is a fun romantic college kinda film This is a Kuch Kuch Hota Hai type film, thankfully there is no much heroic style or fake college scenes here the crowd is real and thankfully the heroes and heroines are not worshiped though the scenes involving the characters at the start(at the airport) and the entire story telling style could be done without every time focus shifted, it got boring The entire cat scene looks too childish while the entire farewell track is nice and then the scenes between Genelia and Imran are cute Even Manjiri's part is good The Sohail- Arbaaz scenes are quite funny first but get repetitive The Prateik Babbar part is the best part, it actually needed more time Towards the end however the film gets boring, with the entire horse part and the airport scene looking too bad and childishDirectorally Abbas shows a flair for light entertainers, after writing lines and screenplay for Munnabhai MBBS and LRMB he shows he can be a good director Music is good and suits the filmPerformances are nice Imran Khan looks the part, performs well in serious, romantic and comic scenes and also reminds of his uncle Genelia is awesome, this is her true heroine role, she does a g8 job even manjiri is good While Prateik babbar is outstanding in his role Ratna and Naseeruddin Shah have a great chemistry and their acting is great Paresh Rawal is funny after a long time, he steals many scenes Arbaaz Khan and Sohail are funny at times irritating at times
