Great Film overall
Don't listen to the Hype. It's awful
Beautiful, moving film.
It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
A gentle comedy drama about a Greek family living in London who go from rags to riches and learn what is really important in life. It's not exactly an original idea but it's performed by a good cast of actors whom it is easy to warm to.It's impossible to dislike the Papadopoulos family. There's the two estranged brothers Harry and Spiros who have to work through their differences, and then there's the three children, of which the star is Theo, played by Thomas Underhill.Theo is a child genius who wears a bright bow-tie, likes to trade on the stock market in his spare time and gets all the best lines. This would be a poorer movie without him.The actual plot is rather predictable. Harry loses his fortune and even when he has the chance to get it back, learns to prioritise his family and his roots. His high-flying accountant is a cliché of a greedy banker. And of course there's a pretty love interest.Papadopoulos & Sons is not an exceptional movie but it's warmhearted and easy to watch.
This film was nothing like what I expected it to be. It is called a comedy drama, but I found it hard to raise even a smile. The one Greek actor and like-able character gets killed off, there is hardly any interaction with the Turkish kebab shop owners, which really could have brought up some good scenes and comedy. There was so much more they could have done, but took the easy way out. There is hardly any Greek actors, which was such a shame. It was clichéd, predictable, and poorly written.Anyone expecting a "Big Fat Greek Wedding" type of film, you will be sorely disappointed. Instantly forgettable, and such a shame as had so much potential.
After following the film's journey via twitter, right the way through to the cinema release, I finally saw this when it was released in London with family and friends.I had been anticipating seeing this film before it even finished filming. It most definitely lived up to my expectations! Papa&Sons is such a sweet, funny movie with a fantastic cast! Great feel good film, I laughed, I cried, I laughed again and left the cinema with a big smile on my face really well written and made. Definitely something I'd watch again and again and AGAIN!! Look forward to watching it with my Greek Cypriot parents next time they are in the UK as it's soon out on DVD whoo-hoo! Great job Marcus Markou and one up for the independent film maker!!!!!
What a funny warm hearted film. I laughed, shed a tear and was thoroughly entertained. I can't wait for Papadopoulos & Sons release. I watch a lot of blockbusters and rarely indie films, this was a lovely surprise to see such a well made and enjoyable indie movie. Stephen Dillane is absolutely wonderful and surprisingly very funny. I have the pleasure of working with Marcus everyday and I was lucky enough to read the script before production and watch the making of Papadopoulos & Sons from start to finish. I remember reading the script on my way to work in the train and found myself overwhelmed with emotion and I completely forgot where I was. Some parts I was laughing so loud until I noticed stares from fellow commuters as well as having tears rolling down my cheeks and thinking to myself get a hold of yourself man, you are in public. From script to screen, there was no disappointment, it was as I had imagined it in my head as I read the script in train.Papadopoulos & Sons am must see film.
