Sorry, this movie sucks
Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
When a movie has you begging for it to end not even half way through it's pure crap. We've all seen this movie and this characters millions of times, nothing new in it. Don't waste your time.
There are many films that carry a great significance. Some are landmarks in film history, the debut of an actor or group of actors or character. As most people know, Steamboat Willie is important for being the first public appearance of Mickey Mouse and the first cartoon with perfectly synchronized sound. The image of Mickey piloting a steamboat is the most iconic image in animation ever.I, and some people, will think of iconic films like this to become cliché and tiresome, considering how frequently they're shown and talked about. However, there's something truly special and remarkable about Steamboat Willie that makes it timeless and charming. I've always found charm in the primitive recording technology that made the soundtrack and how Mickey and Minnie only squeak. I also loved the rendition of Turkey and the Straw. Some people, myself included, will object to the animal abuse that takes place. (some reissue prints cut some of those scenes out). This short made Mickey a star and the most popular cartoon character of the late 20's and early 30's. Over the decades, some people have wondered how a flat one dimensional character with no personality become immensely popular. Especially since there were several characters like this at the time that didn't come remotely close to becoming as popular. I reckon that the use of sound made him popular at the time. This iconic short should continued to be enjoyed and preserved for years to come.
At first I thought this would be one of those things where you say, "The film wasn't much, but we get to see Mickey Mouse for the first time in sound." To the contrary, this is a funny, endearing little film, with our hero turning objects into musical instruments. He is a bad employee, constantly ridden by Pete his boss on the boat. Sometimes these bosses get a bad rap because, after all, their business should be important. Nevertheless, Mickey and Minnie are really cute and steal the show. I have always been impressed with the way the characters move and gyrate to the music. While the drawing is simple, it works wonderfully.
Mickey Mouse, piloting a steamboat, delights his passenger, Minnie, by making musical instruments out of the menagerie on deck.I suppose someone could look back now (2015) and say this was a very simple film, and not all that amazing. But put in the context of its time, it really shook people and the young animation industry. Mixing sound and cartoons was still a new thing and this film not only blended them, but provided something people actually wanted to watch.Technical achievements aside, this is Mickey and Minnie Mouse almost 100 years ago... and they are going strong as ever today. Has any other cartoon character had that kind of longevity or long-lasting multi-generational appeal? Maybe to some degree, but certainly not on this level.
Steamboat Willie (1928) **** (out of 4) I think it's quite fair to say that STEAMBOAT WILLIE is the most important animated film in history. While it wasn't the first Mickey Mouse short (it's the third) it is the one that really turned him into a superstar and it took Walt Disney into a while new level unlike anything we've ever seen. The story is pretty simple as Mickey decides to whistle and dance his way throughout the boat. Yes, whoever would have guessed that by simply whistling this little mouse would become a part of cinematic history? Not only is this film historic but it's also quite excellent in its own right. The film has a certainly charm and good-hearted feel to it that it's impossible not to smile with it and it's even more impossible not to want to join in on the whistling. There are countless highlights here but my favorite has always been the sequence where the cow is too small to get loaded onto the boat so Mickey must do something to put meat on his bones.
