Save your money for something good and enjoyable
Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.
The first must-see film of the year.
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
James Rolfe is a huge inspiration to me and led me to discover my love for filmmaking, i'm also a huge fan of the AVGN series. So it saddens me to say I couldn't even finish this waste of time. I followed the production from announcement to completion and I can't believe how truly awful it is.. After seeing this Im left to wonder if James is in any way a competent filmmaker. Ive seen all his college films and while they aren't great they show technical competence and at least some creative ability. What it boils down to is James doesnt seem to be an especially imaginative or creative person, at least if this film is anything to go by. Everything in this film is ripped from things James likes such as video games, giant monster movies, zombie movies you get the idea. Ive seen almost all his videos so I know what he likes in movies and while he loves the superficial elements things like story, character, good writing and all the key components of a good film dont seem to interest him and this film fully demonstrates it. This isn't a movie its James Rolfe emptying his nostalgic fantasies onto the screen and putting his angry video game nerd character in the centre of it all. There is no attempt to tell a compelling story, give us interesting characters or even competent effects. The comedy is pitiful and well below what James has demonstrated in his AVGN series. James has always had a love for practical effects and has given many a bitter tirade about modern cgi so in this film he aimed for as many practical effects as possible. Are they charming? Sure. Are they in any way convincing? Of course not and maybe this was the intention but James, if you aren't gonna take this film seriously why should we? This movie is just a massive in joke and comes across as senseless. Its not funny its not entertaining and as a huge AVGN fan I was severely let down. I wish James all the best in his future projects but honestly as much as his journey inspired my younger self part of me wonders if James is just a poor filmmaker. I love James' passion but that passion is wasted in garbage like this.
There are a few things to say about this movie. The first is that the "hate" surrounding this movie sounds to me something that comes from people either not understanding its humor, probably fans of shitty comedies like Scary Movie, or people who expected some super-glorified review instead of an actual movie. The second thing is that although this is the AVGN's Movie... it's actually more the James Rolfe's movie. This movie is a sort of tribute to what James Rolfe loves and also his particular passions about movie. Those who know him well know he likes old movies, even old 1930's chillers, that he enjoys certain cinematic styles, practical effects, etcetera. It's also a movie about his nostalgia, the crazy ideas he came up with his friends over the years (like the crazy robot creature in the movie and shitpickle who also make a cameo).Indeed the movie contains a lot of materials that only fans of James Rolfe's work will understand... not only his AVGN show, but also his life passions and his ideas on film making. For example many special effects are intentionally cheesy, done with plastic models, which give the movie a sort of "Ed Wood allure", but in a positive way. Of course people expecting big studio SFX will be disappointed, but if you understand Rolfe's passion for practical effects and appreciate it as well, you will enjoy the cheesiness. Also there is this absurd, sometimes hilariously gory, humor to it. Of course some things are not perfect. The two co-stars do not really stand out (but are not that horrible either). Many wanted "known people" in it like Mike Matei... but Matei is rather camera shy (as he has admitted himself) and we do not really know if he can act at all (or even wants to for that matter, beyond his cameo). I am sure that if he did not appear as a co-star he had his reasons. Some parts of the story and pacing are not perfect either and not all jokes are evenly good. Still better than most comedies Hollywood churn out each year though.--A final word on the "haters". Some of them say that people have vomited ad hominems towards those who defend this movie, but I would say those people have more than one problem.I would group the haters in 3 groups: 1- People who don't know Rolfe/AVGN and do not appreciate his humor and ideas. Fair enough. Some people love "American Pie" movies, I think they are some of the worst and unfunny movies ever made. Tastes differ.2- Fans who were over-hyped for some glorified 2-hour review and expected something totally different. In the words of another game-reviewer: "fans are ever-complaining dipshits"... and often it's true. Most adaptations of books/comics/games into movies are usually hated the most by the so-called "fans". I will not say they have no right to their opinion, as they do... but I think they should start to understand that the movies is MORE than just about AVGN and the web-show.3- People who are simply stupid. This is not meant as an ad hominem but rather as a criticism of those who attack the movie (and those who like it) and have poor reasons to hate the movie.---As a final word I would say: not a perfect movie, but a good one. Yet not for everyone. I would not even say "only for fans". Rather I would say: for fans and non-fans who can appreciate intentional cheesiness and the other quirks of the movie and that can look past some of it's flaws.7.5/10 (rounded up to 8) I would say.
A self indulgent fest of unfunny jokes, bad acting, and terrible side characters. The movie itself has nothing to do with the Nerd other than the Nerd character being in it.Other than that you get a movie that is not good enough to be called a B-movie, but has so much more effort and time put into it.The length alone harms this movie, if it was 30 minutes it would probably much better.Overall disappointing and near impossible to watch, I found RedLetterMedia's Space Cop better; that alone is terrifying.
I've never heard of ANGRY VIDEO GAME NERD before I watched this movie, he's one of those youtubers who plays video-games and reviews them, which in all honesty doesn't sound like it would make for much of a movie. But of course this is far from a biography but a low-budget comedy/scifi extravaganza with the nerd playing a version of himself as he sets out to debunk the myth that Atari buried thousands of copies of the video game E.T. (based on the movie) out of shame in the desert, but what he discover is a conspiracy far greater than anyone could have imagined.Reminiscent of FANBOYS (2009) and PAUL (2011) but with a budget of less than a 100th of the latter... Literally, PAUL (2011) was a 40.000.000 dollar movie where as ANGRY VIDEO GAME was 325.000 so yeah as far as special-effects goes it's pretty darn bad BUT that adds a bit to it's charm...Perhaps they were trying to do a little too much at times but it makes it a bit more unpredictable I suppose if nothing else, and they probably wanted to give their fans bang for their buck as it was financed by a fundraiser.Overall though, when I saw it was almost 2 hours long I had second thoughts cause most regular comedies made by the pros don't really have the material to sustain interest for me for that long but the ride was surprisingly smooth in terms of that, didn't even consider hitting the fastforward button once. The acting is so so, but what can you expect from a youtuber? He wasn't terrible at least and fairly funny at times, the rest of the cast were good enough. Entertaining if you're in the right mind for it, just don't expect a Steven Spielberg spectacle of a movie... Probably helps if you've at least played an ATARI or a Nintendo 8-bit console or something of the sorts.
