Just perfect...
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.
Another instance where a good, potentially great idea of a movie produces an outcome that is not so desirable.A former army officer introduces the idea of being good to random people and instead of a thanks he asks beneficiaries to be good to other people in return (aka Bolywood version of 'pay it forward)'. As said earlier, there is nothing wrong with such a concept but the issue I take is with its cinematic execution.Plenty of talk but little action. We get it, we know what the main character is all about so what is the point of so much repetition of the concept? I did however enjoyed the conflict between the altruist and the corrupt political establishment who do not favour such an idea and are prepared to do all they can to destroy him. The powerlessness of the powerful versus the power of the powerless makes for an intriguing clash. Not a total loss, it is just that it could have been much better.
Please watch Jai Ho (जय हो) only if you are a die-hard fan of Salman Khan. Otherwise, this movie is a great disappointment as far as the plot of the movie, direction, story, screenplay are concerned. It is a fact that Salman has been a great mass puller with his Dabbang / Bodyguard / Wanted moves, but he may probably not be able to repeat his success. Salman Khan is playing the role of an ex-army officer, Jai Agnihotri. He wants to create a better nation. The effort was to convey that even an ordinary single human being can be a change catalyst and create a national stir for positive change. But the whole message gets diluted with the way it has been handled. I wish, at least a particular social issue could have been focused upon. There were lot of instances of Salman being a good Samaritan, but it seemed too superficial, it is tough to identify with the character. It lacked the flavor of country's present political scenario. We have seen enough of Salman's one-man action sequences which are there in this as well, added with Salman's bites or roars. Riya Agnihotri (Salman's Sister played by Tabu) is unconditional in her love towards her brother and has got good amount of screen time. It is always a pleasure to watch Tabu perform, but she doesn't have to do much. Daisy Shah has definitely given some good dance moments, and also, she has screen presence, but her role has not been sketched out properly. And there are a list of actors (get breathless): Nadira Babbar, Danny Denzongpa, Daisy Shah, Sana Khan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Aditya Pancholi, Mohnish Behl, Mukul Dev, Ashmit Patel, Yash Tonk, Nauheed Cyrusi, Bruna Abdullah, Genelia, Vikas Bhalla, Sunil Shetty, Santosh Shukla, Pulkit Samrat and many more They come and go without actually being able to make a remarkable impact upon the audience. Too many characters are introduced. Background score by Sandeep Shirodkar is good. 'Tere Naina maar hi daalenge' is also good. Other songs by Sajid-Wajid are average. Sets during the dance sequences are huge and presentable. Is this going to be a 'Jai Ho' at box office ?
Salman's personality in the movie is pretty much his exact personality in reality, which, in this case, is a good thing. The movie is all about doing good and fits the theme perfectly. For once it's about the message, and not the love story, though I do wish there was more of the love story in it.Just like every other Bollywood movie the action is very over-the-top, but it wouldn't be Bollywood movie if it wasn't. The music is not brilliant, but it is nice. Daisy Shah did very well for her first real roll. If you don't like her acting, her dancing will make up for it. She is an amazing dancer, especially in her first number in the film. Basically, it's a clean, family film, which is hard to come by today. Give it a try. It is worth it.
I have seen most people compare this film with one made in South India. I would not comment on the other film. What I do know is that the story theme/essence had featured in a 2000 Hollywood movie named 'Pay It Forward'. Of course there are differences. Hollywood film is about a young school kid, the part substituted in Hindi avataar by a go hit them all macho muscular ex-army Major portrayed by Salmaan. If I hadn't known and see the Hollywood movie, I might have given a star or two more to this film. A very powerful story theme was so grossly wasted when they tried to wrap it up with adding 'masala' Bollywood stuff. I feel the subject of the story did not get enough justice. A lot of unnecessary importance was given to 'glamour' and 'romance'. Of course a few too many songs too have taken away the spotlight from the main storyline. This film could have created a much bigger impact when the subject of story would have had a chance to shine.
