Bad Acting and worse Bad Screenplay
There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
I'm going to give this film high ratings for being more ambitious than the film had the budget for. It was hurried and skipped around too fast - this COULD have been a Babylon 5 type series where you ignore the okay special effects for character, story, and plot. The character acting was forced (the women were all better than the men), but the plot was actually creative and warranted more of a short series than a film. Back story was good and creative as well. Despite this obviously being a low budget film, something makes you want to like this... and I also wonder if they searched for a male lead who sounds like Han Solo. The voice sound actually contributed to a lot of the acceptance of that character... but without the class.
This movie is kind of entertaining for the sci-fi fan. It has many references to other Sci-Fi creations, including Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate, Battle Star Galatcia and Dune. In fact the film must assume many of the users are familiar with many of these Stories as elements of each are used throughout. For instance Stargates are used both with no explanation of what for. The film is scattered with cheesy humor, that gives it much charm. The start of the movie features a 5+ minute prologue, which in part seems to be put in to extend the movie length. Don't see it to be blown away by special effects. See it when you are in the mood for some grade B Sci-fi.
It is rare that one finds sci fi action films that dare to broach the themes of women's issues. For centuries, we have dealt with biological clocks, and this story shines a unique light on women's struggles with femininity and motherhood. How refreshing to have a film where female characters are more than cardboard cutouts for the hero to exploit. Hats off to Neil Johnson for creating a compelling story line that speaks to the plight of all mankind to find a meaningful presence in the universe. The special effects are outstanding, and the musical score is gorgeous. Acting performances bring the story to life. Jay Laisne is handsome and natural in the lead role of Derasi Vorde and creates the perfect charismatic hero. A good theatrical effort and well worth seeing.
Wildly uneven scifi tale about the battle between two branches of humanity for domination that stretches back to the dawn of time and goes all the way out to the stars. The film concentrates on the last survivors of humanity like us and how they fight off the genetically altered bad guys and try to repopulate. You've been here before but sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't, such as out hero's swaggering attitude which come off as the sort of macho BS. The effects are some times great and sometimes really poor. Though for all its technical flaws it kind of almost works, unfortunately the script is so full of useless jargon and its own scifi terms the plot ceases to move. Its as if the film has to keep reminding you its a scifi flick and it kills everything. It makes watching this painful.Take a pass.
