Gamera escapes from his rocket enclosure and makes his way back to Earth as a giant opal from New Guinea is brought back to Japan. The opal is discovered to have been an egg that births a new monster called Barugon. The creature attacks the city of Osaka by emitting a destructive rainbow ray from his back, along with a freezing spray capable of incapacitating Gamera.

Fantastic!
The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
Gamera, Daiei Film's answer to rival studio Toho's Godzilla character returns in this, his second outing. Like Godzilla, Gamara's first film was a solo effort while the second finds the tremendous testunid facing off against an enemy monster, in this case 'Barugon', a lizardlike kaiju armed with a freeze-gas emitting tongue and a deadly 'rainbow ray' (note: not to be confused with Baragon, a Toho monster). The first half of the film involves recovery of a giant opal hidden in a sacred cave, which only serves to set up the arrival of Barugon in Japan, after which there are a number of monster fights with lots of collateral destruction before Gamera gains the upper hand. As kaiju films go, this one is OK - the special effects are adequate, although the miniatures are not as detailed as those in Godzilla films of the same era and both monsters suffer from the problem of trying to make four legged suit-mated creatures not look like men on their hands and knees. I watched a somewhat poor-quality English-dubbed version, so can't really comment on the acting or the script but the 'jewel theft' backstory (and the human characters in general) was not particularly interesting. Even by lax kaiju standards, a rocket-powered flying turtle is a bit far-fetched, but the character has staying power (he was still flying as of 2006's "Gamera the Brave"). Unlike later entries in the first generation Gamera films (to 1971), this film does not showcase annoying kids and the goofy, yet infectious Gamera theme is not yet heard. It is also bit grim in places (there are a number of murders mixed into the subplot). Worth watching for kaiju fans, but probably a pass for the unenlightened. Followed by "Gamera vs. Gyaos" (1967), where the titanic turtleoid's cloying love for irritating children starts to manifest.
I will give credit to the original "Gamera" movie for launching a genre, but this isn't as good. I do like the idea of the adult characters in this. It's even interesting to see the humans get somewhat close to beating Barugon. I was seriously afraid they were just going to leave Gamera behind. The effects aren't that bad. It does get pretty bad when you really see the closeups of the creatures. It just seems like a movie that isn't that well spread out. There's too much focusing on the humans at first and then too much focusing on the monsters. The dubbing seems really bad in this. I guess animation is just better suited for dubbing. Some of the sets are pretty creative. It still doesn't give you anything better than a Godzilla movie. While those weren't masterpieces, they were still more creative than this film. The lighting effects are pretty bad here too. Maybe it was just the low resolution of the version I saw. It's just nothing good. *1/2
A giant monster that emits a destructive ray from its back attacks Japan and takes on Gamera. While I am not terribly familiar with the Gamera series, or giant monsters in general, this one was mildly amusing and somewhat confusing. I thought Barugon was a good monster, and his frozen breath was pretty cool. But then the rainbow beam... that was more than a little strange, and I presume it was only in the film to show off their new color cameras.Different versions of this film probably exist, but the one I saw had ten minutes or less of Gamera. I thought for a film called "Gamera vs. Barugon" there would be a lot more of the title creature, but I guess not.
Oh my. I hardly dare to write down my true feelings about this movie. So many before me have written that this is one of the best Gamera movies. I am happy I have only seen this one. For this is junk, pure junk. Apparently the IMDb rating of around 3 is more accurate than the comments are, for this is a bad movie. The story is far fetched, but I can live with that. The special effects however are ...the worst of the worst. Gamera is a puppet spitting fire. Nothing wrong with that, but why do we have to see the burner in his mouth? The final battle between Gamera and Barugon, another puppet, is so pitiful and badly done, than if you feel any tears coming up, it is because of laughter. Even monster or SF movies have to have some credibility. This movie has none. It is very much like a porn movie. The people who like porn always overestimate a porn movie. Apparently so do people who like monster junk from the 50's. A series like "The Thunderbirds" is much better, for it aims at children. This movie addresses an adult crowd. And it fails in all respects. For me a 3 out of 10: it was already junk when released, it is hopelessly outdated junk nowadays.
