A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.

For fans of The Witch, this will be another fantastic piece. While there are slight issues with continuity and motivation of some parts of the plot, this film offers mystery, action gore (even if a bit outdated), and wonderful composition, all while developing a narrative that pulls you in and invests in the well earned climax. The artistry is absolutely the best when it comes to the beauty of the shots and the musical score which lends heavily to the mood. The subplots seem to be disjointed and I can't honestly say they all finally join in a way that'll satisfy everyone, but they definitely add up in an overall world building/background developing kind of way, especially with some of the more subversive undertones for those who appreciate the slightly deeper meaning to some of the parts.A few of the characters are one note, and you kind of wonder if you'd be better than them in the same situation, but it doesn't hamper the film and they work together relatively well.Bottom line? Not a scary film, but somewhat creepy and blossoming with macabre beauty.

I went into watching this film because I was on an Argento kick and was trying to devour as much of his work as possible. After watching this, myself and a friend of mine decided we weren't classing this as Argento anymore. It is directed by Michele Soavi, who directed Dellamorte Dellamore, a film I love and so I figured that the combination of two great directors would produce something special. It didn't work for me.Watching this in the middle of my Argento-a-thon, it just didn't fit. Far from the Giallo style Argento is so amazing at, this is tale of a big Gothic cathedral, built over a mass gravesite, which is developing powers to trap people inside it. It's a fairly bizarre concept and filmed in such a way that I just couldn't get in to it. For starters the pacing was all off; it would cut from action scenes to bizarre, seemingly unrelated scenes for quite some time, then back in for some more of the people trapped in a church. It was jarring and felt confused, and I just didn't take to it at all.The location of the cathedral and the architecture were brilliant and really lent an added depth to the film, likewise the cinematography and score were both good. The acting was hit and miss and the overall storyline left a lot to be desired, for me. It all boils down to personal taste really, and I tend to prefer a more real threat in my movies - a homicidal maniac, a black-gloved killer or a chainsaw-wielding nut are much more up my street than demons are, and so it takes something a little more special than The Church to get me to really love a demon-based horror. It's not a terrible movie, but it's really nothing special, and having seen it, I wouldn't bother to watch it again.

I found out about THE CHURCH after hearing that Dario Argento also produced films for other directors so since I was new to Argento's work I started fishing around and came across THE CHURCH and found out about DEMONS 1 and 2 since it appears this film was an unofficial third installment to that series but to be honest I wasn't overly fond of THE CHURCH.Don't get me wrong Michele Soavi is an excellent director, the film as an undeniable atmosphere, the cinematography is just first class, the main thing I liked about it was the camera movements, I'm just a sucker for camera movements, my main problem with this film is the fact that it has such a lousy plot, I mean it has beautiful direction and camera work but the script really kills it, halfway through this film just becomes weird and suddenly there's no plot structure, you even lose track of whose supposed to be the lead character because the film becomes that confusing. The acting is okay but not really something to talk about although the film's dubbing can be a little distracting.Overall, the film excels in style and cinematography and the setting does have a real Gothic feel to it but it has a really lousy plot, I suppose I could call it a bad movie that's very stylishly made.

In the Middle Ages, the Knights Templar invade a supposed coven of witches and they slaughter the community. The dig an unholy collective grave, bury the bodies and build a church on the top of the corpses. On the present days, the ambitious librarian Evan (Tomas Arana) is hired to organize the books of the church. He meets the archaeologist Lisa (Barbara Cupisti) that is researching the catacombs of the church and he accidentally unleashes and is possessed by an ancient demon. Sooner several visitors are trapped inside the church and possessed by demons. Father Gus (Hugh Quarshie) and the teenager Lotte (Asia Argento) are the only persons that are not possessed, and Father Gus discovers a secret in the construction of the church that might be the last chance to save mankind."La Chiesa" is a great Gothic horror film with story of Dario Argento and his daughter Asia Argento in an important role. The plot is a prequel to Demons 1 and 2, and I saw this film for the first time on 17 February 2012 and today I have decided to watch it again. Unfortunately this film has not been released on DVD or Blu-Ray in Brazil and the image of the VHS awfully dubbed in English is poor and does not highlight the magnificent cinematography or the creepy special effects. The soundtrack has the music of Keith Emerson, Goblin and Philip Glass and completes this great film of demons. My vote is seven.Title (Brazil): "A Catedral" ("The Cathedral")Note: On 22 Jn 2017, I saw this film again on DVD, unfortunately dubbed in English.
