That was an excellent one.
From my favorite movies..
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
This is like one of those cheap dollar store coloring books made into a movie. To say it's written for kids is an insult to kids. Maybe it would be more accurate to say it's written for babies. Despite the animation style and some of the same voices, this has NOTHING in common with the Bruce Timm/Paul Dini TV series. This is bad on every level. The worst of the worst is the portrayal of Lex Luthor. First, he's voiced by Powers Boothe instead of the awesome Clancy Brown. Second, Lex is portrayed here as a comical buffoon. Those comparing this Lex to the Gene Hackman Lex don't know what they're talking about. There really is nothing to recommend here. If you're a Superman completist and you just have to see everything with him, then go right ahead. Otherwise don't torture yourself.
This movie completely ignores the original series as well as the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited series to come up with a badly written story that completely rewrites Lex Luthor's and Brainiac's personalities.Clancey Brown is SORELY missed, Booth Power's is horrible.Lex Luthor is a buffoon and Brainaic has been changed from calculated computer into a 2 dimensional 2-bit super villain. The only good thing about this film is they got rid of Jimmy Olsen's mullet.Step 1 when writing a story set in pre-existing continuity, research said continuity.
I was very upset by the demise of Justice League Unlimited. It sounded the death knell for all of the DC Animated series line that has been going on since the original Batman The Animated Series, that started way back in 1992. I had also felt that over the years, that like most great shows, the story telling had matured very well. The only thing that I had to count on now was direct to DVD movies & was very excited to see a new Superman the Animated Series movie coming out. To add to the excitement, Tim Daly, was returning as Superman's voice. He had not done Superman throughout the 2 Justice League series. Then came great disappointment. Powers Booth as Lex Luthor? Lance Henricksen as the laughing Brainiac? It's very obvious that they wanted lighter villains for 2 reasons. One, to mimic Kevin Spacey's Lex in Superman Returns & two, to lighten this up for child consumption. Clancy Brown & Corey Burton embodied these 2 classic villains. Braniac as a cold, calculative computer & Lex as the ruthless buisnessman/scientist. They threw all continuity to the wind with this movie as well. Brainiac not knowing of the orb of Krypton in Superman's Fortress? It was his to begin with. Obviously they chose to ignore all of Brainy's Kryptonian origins. Lex's henchwoman Mercy, a giggly bubblehead? Also, since when did the Phantom Zone develop a revolving door? That's the purpose of that inter-dimensional gulag, it's inescapable unless someone lets you out. I could go on & on but instead I will say: If your a big fan of all the other animated series incarnations, this will not please you at all. If your looking for a fun, light hearted Superman romp for your 6-10 year old, this is the DVD for you.
Although I'm a college educated adult, I actually like the Superman, Batman and Justice League cartoon series (I'm sure I'm far from alone on this one). The plots have been excellent examples of sci-fi writing and can be quite clever, complex and entertaining. Not so this one. The vast majority of this movie consisted of Superman and Braniac pounding each other into the ground, throwing each other through buildings, etc. The encounters went on for so long I got bored and fastforwarded through the monotony. There is a weak plot that holds this together, but it's not strong enough to redeem it. The phrase "phoning it in" leaps to mind. If you're a Superman fan, you're going to be disappointed in this.
