I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
The story of "The Chubbchubbs!" is a cute one, the animation is pretty solid and the voice-acting and singing aren't too shabby either, but somehow something was missing to make this slightly-under-six-minute short film really memorable for me. I have to say I am a bit surprised this actually ended up winning the Oscar for best animated short film in a year that had competition from Japan, Poland, Germany and Pixar's Monster movie franchise. Maybe they really liked these little chicken-like creatures or the Star Wars reference. However, I thought the whole foreign planet idea or the constant crashing of the main character into the bar singer was just executed in a rather shoddy fashion and never really had me on the top of my seat. I'd only recommend this one to animation lovers. Everybody else is not missing too much.
I thought that the plot of this film was great. The story of a clumsy janitor who had a dream of singing on stage was entertaining to me. I thought that this film had a lot of great humor including when the janitor would fall onto the leader singer. It was interesting how the director's were able to fool the view by making the Chubbchubbs look cute, instead of the being the tough monsters carrying weapons. The animation was excellent and left me wanting to watch this as a feature length film. I especially liked the Star Wars references because I am a big fan of the series. Overall, I think that this was a great film and I give it a 10 out of 10.
The graphics were quite good, appearing (at least in small form) to be on a par w/ Pixar's.But the visual gags are the best part of this short. In particular, the references to "Star Wars" and "E.T." Other than those, "Chubbchubbs" was a cute and consistently amusing, yet never hilarious animated short.
After watching this short movie on the Men In Black 2 DVD, it should be made into a feature length movie. Not only was I killing myself laughing but my grandson was having fits of laughter. 6 minutes is no where near enough of this movie. Please make a feature length movie people. Steve
