I wanted to but couldn't!
I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
A clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.
PHANTOM is a Cold War submarine thriller with a B-movie feel. I found it a worthwhile watch despite some deficiencies in terms of scripting and the like; the efforts of a stalwart cast help to make this an engaging and occasionally suspenseful viewing experience. Ed Harris, ever excellent, plays the captain of a Russian submarine who finds himself at odds with the strange orders he receives from the secret service men on board. David Duchovny relishes the opportunity to play a sinister character while the likes of William Fichtner and Lance Henriksen bring solid support. The film keeps you guessing at times and has the right kind of claustrophobic atmosphere you expect from a submarine flick; at times, it's also unexpectedly moving.
A thoroughly engaging story with a great ensemble cast make Phantom a well made, enjoyable movie full of grittiness and tension.Don't like Americans playing Russians? Get over it.Not 100% authentic? I guess you thought American Sniper was a documentary?Seriously though, this is much better than many sub movies I've seen whether big budget or small and deserves all the praise it's been given thus far and little or none of the detrimental whinings of negative reviewers.Once again, have a look at the 1s and 2s and take note they they are predominantly one review only (namely this one) and have apparently been members of IMDb for decades. Take from that what you will.
The work of Pen Densham is exceptional. The movie displays directorial talent but this just one of many. Ed Harris is one of America's most talented actors. The movie gets your blood racing and opens unanswered questions that never lose their relevance. The Captain of a vessel is in a sense the leader of a select group and primal issues of tribal coherence are uncovered.
What a long wait it has been since I saw u-boat flick! It's been so many years, I have to check when they came out, all of the great ones; "Das Boot", "The hunt for Red October", "The enemy below", "Crimson Tide"... I must say, after seeing this, I'd like to see more. Films like this are bound to be tight, and well acted, if you get the right actors to do it. Director Todd Robinson obviously did here.Based on a true story, we follow a Cold War Russian u-boat crew when they come in, and are sent out right away the morning after on an old submarines allegedly last trip before it's to be emptied and sold to the Chinese. The mission also includes a couple of strangers with a command to follow, with a secret mission. What, is not to be revealed until they are out on open sea.Ed Harris is the one bargaining of this to be quality, and boy it is. We also get to see David Duchovny, William Fichtner, Kip Pardue and Lance Henriksen in central roles.I'm relieved this isn't a film in which the actors are to talk English with a Russian accent. This film is too good to fall into that category. Another quality sign. This is history telling, of history we don't want to re-live. Thank God those days are over. Let's hope they never return.
