Funny, strange, confrontational and subversive, this is one of the most interesting experiences you'll have at the cinema this year.
It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
Dolph Lundgren is given a chance at freedom, if he agrees to rescue a kidnapped American woman. He agrees, but finds out he isn't being told the truth about the whole situation. Direct Contact is FAR from a good movie. It has quite a bit of stock footage, shoddy editing which is very rudimentary, many plot holes, but I actually managed to have fun at times. Maybe it was in the frame of mind I was in, but I couldn't help but enjoy it a little bit. I knew from the opening prison sequence where Dolph is kicking all kinds of ass, I was gonna at least have a little bit of fun. It's hard not to enjoy a movie that is filled with senseless gunfire and explosions. I also have to give some credit to the action scenes. I was on the edge of my seat during a scene where Dolph is on a motorcycle, and is chased with tanks. On the downside of things, as I mentioned at the start of the review, the stock footage can't be ignored, and comes across as incredibly cheap. I was also irritated by the main female character Ana Gale (Gina May) her incessant complaining drove me bonkers, as did her amateurish acting skills. Her only saving grace was that she is quite the looker. Dolph Lundgren will never win an academy award for his acting, he's rather wooden, but I always enjoy watching him do what he does best. Kick ass, and take names. When he has the proper script, he can truly deliver. This isn't that script I'm talking about, but he was still fun to watch. Michael Pare is fairly good as the villain, despite a couple of groaners he had for dialog. P.S What's with these lazy titles? Dolph's already done two movies with the word "Direct" Direct Action & Direct Command. Come on guys! Where is the creativity? Final Thoughts: Sue me. I had some fun with it. It's a pretty crappy STD movie, but its FUN crap. It's a great selection to watch with your friends at a party, and have a hoot with. This sure as hell beats watching many of Seagal's STD efforts, I'll say that. 4.4/10
Mike Riggins (Dolph) is rotting away in a Balkans prison for supposedly smuggling weapons. Thankfully he can defend himself against his jailhouse assailants. When Clive Connelly (Pare), a government bigshot, comes to Mike and offers him a total of 200,000 dollars if he can find the kidnapped Ana Gale (May) and bring her back home, Mike agrees. But as it turns out, all is not as it seems, and thanks to some twists and turns, we see there is a conspiracy that goes all the way to the top. Will Mike and Ana make it to safety? In one of the better Nu-Image movies we've seen of late, Direct Contact delivers the Dolph you want. Sure, as we've discussed before, he elevates all movies he's in. His presence means a lot, but here it's just enjoyable to watch him beat, shoot, pistol-whip and blow up everybody in sight. Even the squibs are entertaining, as baddies die unnecessarily bloody deaths, sometimes to humorous effect. However, it's not all good news, as some lame green screen and CGI effects hurt the movie. These things are just annoyances, nothing more, and it's puzzling why some filmmakers believe they are important to the movie. There's even some ridiculous sped-up chase footage where it seems like the "Yakety Sax" should be playing on the soundtrack. Somehow, the doofuses at Nu-Image don't seem to realize this is DOLPH LUNDGREN, not Benny Hill. But we suppose it's forgivable, because Direct Contact is an entertaining, if not that original, production where Dolph meets another titan of the genre: Michael Pare. Pare puts in a good performance and it's cool to see this "clash of the titans" as he faces off with Dolph. He doesn't seem to phone in his role, and that's certainly a good thing. Also it should be noted that there is a baddie in the movie named Drago (Rahal). He's such an ethnic stereotype, he gives Balki of Perfect Strangers fame a bad name. Perhaps they couldn't get Bronson Pinchot. That aside, in a "meta" move, it's Drago vs. Drago! Was this done on purpose, or are there no more generic Eastern-European names left to use? (To answer our own question, judging by the end credits of most DTV productions nowadays, which read like the Bulgarian phone book, no.) Also, even though it has been mentioned before, we can't not bring up the scene where a character actually says, "What if he goes AOL?" How this passed the director, the actor himself, the editing process, and any step in between without any notice and ended up in the final film is anybody's guess. But to answer the man's question, he'll get mail, news, messenger, and plenty of extras for only $9.99 a month. Someone find Mike Riggins! So aside from the aforementioned technical hiccups, Direct Contact (not to be confused with Direct Action, 2004), provides a solid night of Dolph fun.For more insanity, please visit: comeuppancereviews.com
I can't believe the low ratings and the bad reviews ! Direct Contact was better than expected and NOT bad as rating and reviews suggest. The Plot is very simple: Mike Riggins (Dolph Lundgren) must rescue Ana, an American girl that is held in a base. Mike succeed in rescuing Ana, but things are not going like expected....Direct Contact contains the many reasons why i like action movies: Awesome main actor, simple plot, bloody violence and action, action and even more action !The action is bloody violent (most of the bullet impacts are bloody).Dolph Lundgren delivers with it's performance and he shows that age doesn't matter if you do an action movie.
I don't comment often but this rating has to be brought down fast, do not waste your time and money on this movie! The poorest editing you'll ever see. Scenes are catastrophically poorly executed, the destruction doesn't even make sense when entire buildings are destroyed in an effort to capture one or two people who inexplicably remain in the buildings while the threat is pending? Car chases where the second passenger is missing in most of the scenes. The plot is so drab it will make you wish you were playing solitaire instead. The acting is atrocious and the "action" scenes aren't even believable. Slaughtering of innocent people throughout the movie for no reason whatsoever, what would the city smell like? Soldiers who can barely move right, let alone make us believe they are in the police or the military. Careless producing and directing. How can someone be shot at so many times at so many angles and still get away, it's bad enough in good movies but this is too much, or should I say far too little. Even my twelve year old son is appalled. The main actor doesn't even come across to be the trained man he is supposed to be. I want my money back!
