just watch it!
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.
What begins as a feel-good-human-interest story turns into a mystery, then a tragedy, and ultimately an outrage.
SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE is a decent enough action B-movie made as a collaboration between America and Russia. The ensemble cast is enough to keep you watching this one, even though the story isn't up to much. The tale sees a bunch of rich thrill-seekers going on a pretend mission in which they dress up as soldiers and engage in mock battles, only to discover that they're soon fighting for their lives. This film suffers from the usual trappings of the B-movie genre. There's plentiful action here but it can feel a bit repetitive and not particularly well staged; the cheapness always comes through. This is where the cast comes in. Christian Slater seems to have been re-invented as an action hero lately and has a shirtless scene here in which he shows off his muscular chest. Sean Bean fits his role like a glove and is typically great. Dominic Monaghan is loud, brash, and has a heart (no stretch, then). James Cromwell is old timer bizarrely wheeled out one last time, and Ving Rhames is a delight as the African arms smuggler. Colm Meaney's villain is all ham but there you go; when watching this film, just remember it could be (and often is) a lot, lot worse.
The actors in this movie have all been in big box office successes' so whatever possessed them to think this one would be a good career move? I fortunately watched this on a PVR set and was able to fast forward every time I felt vomit in my mouth. It is advertised as an adventure comedy, you need to take this description with a pinch of salt, which incidentally will help with the bad taste it will leave you with after viewing. It was a thoroughly poor and disappointing movie, bad action sequences, awful acting and terrible special effects. The movie budget is quoted at around $8 million and it made $1,572,040 at the box office...my question is how come it made so much?
First I am glad that I didn't read any of the reviews before watching this. I think that if I had I might not have bothered watching it. I know now that I would have lost something, a few good laughs. The first 15 minutes I wanted to turn it off and watch something else but I gave it a chance and then surprisingly it got a lot better. I didn't try to watch it as a serious movie but more of a comedy and it worked, worked great. I just loved to see a bunch of rich pampered babies get bullied for once it was so much fun. Look not a great movie but damn was it fun to watch. I laughed like I had not done for a long time. To watch this movie with a critical eye is just not the way to watch it. just sit down , relax and put on your young kid eyes and laugh.
I really expected something just dreadful from the hating reviews here, but I have a soft spot for Christian Slater and Sean Bean. So, I took the plunge, despite the ample warnings. The story is indeed somewhat predictable and uneven, and really just sophomoric. Nevertheless, it's still a good ride, and the acting from most of the cast is pretty good. Slater, Bean, and Cromwell are all committed, as well as most the lesser known lead actors. Rhames is always ridiculous, so it's difficult to fault this film for his typically unconvincing, smirking performance. Meaney just played his usual typecast baddie. Some of the lesser characters were played by what feels like friends and family of the producers, so maybe that's where they got some breaks on their budget. Good for them! I was actually impressed what they did for only $8 million, considering the big names involved. They managed to get some great actors to carry this through, and it was worth it and hopefully didn't tarnish their precarious careers. It can't be easy in the movie business, so I condemn them not. I didn't find the special effects and stunts to be the shambles suggested from the other reviews, and found them adequate to the task. Yeah... I'd like to see someone do something as passable with their iPhone app, as one reviewer quipped. That's just mean and ignorant. All in all, an action movie that I didn't regret watching, but probably wouldn't watch again. Oh, well.
