Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

After the pleasantly surprising first picture, I expected an even better second outing, but what I got was a film too stupid for its own good, with annoying side character's and outlandish, very silly moments that make the first picture seem like a documentary. Aside from one neat, well-choreographed battle sequence and a good central performance from the returning Vegar Hoel (Martin), the film is a mess. This time the jokes are way off, I didn't laugh and found some of the violence reprehensible and pointless, for example there's one scene where The Nazi loses his arm, Martin's car goes off the road and he wakes up in a hospital, with his arm reattached only it's not his, and during an escape from the hospital he kills a young child by accident and tries to see if he's breathing, gut's spray the screen and you see the child motionless and ripped open, I'm guessing this was an attempt at humour, but it was distasteful and unfunny. They try to include a more advanced story this time, using a plot device that shows the Zombie's main objective and what they really wanted, which was not the gold, but it's tacked on and forced and really pointless. Whenever a horror or comedy film works really well, there's usually a sequel, one that never feels anything but disappointing, and here we are, but somehow this one is awful. The new character's, Monica, Daniel and Blake are nerds with irritating personalities, one of them continuously references Star Wars and at one point says "May the force be with you", now is this meant to be a badass zombie picture or a nerd's round up point, the screenwriters seem to be mistaken as there's nothing cool about this gory nerd-fest. There's plenty of unnecessary carnage too where the zombies storm into a peaceful town and butcher families who were merely living in the wrong town at the wrong time, now the film think's this is entertaining but It's actually repulsive because it's not necessarily a fight, but a massacre that never needed to happen.Other problems include terrible dialogue, predictable, lame clichés and a lot of dreadful camera-work from Tommy Wirkola who at times makes the violence look incoherent. The thing that really sealed the nail in the coffin was the ending though; which has Martin digging up his dead girlfriend, so he can resurrect her, and have sex with her in the back of a car whilst Bonnie Tyler's Total eclipse of the heart play's in the background, over the top and disgusting even for a zombie picture, and it was not funny, it was cringeworthily bad and summed up the film as a whole, stupid, pointless and a massive, dreary disappointment. Dead Snow 2 is so awful, it has put me off ever seeing the third one, when it eventually comes out, and I can tell, they will make up another ridiculous story to keep this franchise running.

There are tons of zombie films out there in the world today. Everywhere you look, there are zombies. It's the popular thing in our culture these days. I only wish they were as popular when I was in high-school and college, but I digress. Since the zombie phenomenon is showing no sign of slowing down, there is a wide variety of different types of zombies to add to this ever expanding genre. Perhaps one of my favorite type of zombie film is the nazi zombie genre, which has been around for longer than you might have imagined. It's such an outlandish idea, but is always quite fun to see on screen. In 2009, we received the ever popular nazi zombie film 'Dead Snow', which centered around a group of friends that traveled to a cabin to enjoy some relaxation and snow sports. But when they came across some actual gold, it awoke a nazi German army from underground who were hellbent on brains, blood, and that gold. Five years later, we have a sequel to that film called 'Dead Snow 2: Red vs Dead', and this sequel is just as good if not better than its predecessor. I definitely did nazi that coming. (I'm sorry, but I had to.) In an excellent homage to 'Army of Darkness', 'Red Dead 2' starts off with a narration from Martin (Vegar Hoel), the sole survivor from the first film, who gives us an excellent and gory recap of the first film, which leads us to the current movie, which literally starts off right where the last one left us with Martin trying to escape a giant nazi zombie army led by a zombie named Herzog. This most excellent sequel mixes some brilliant and gut busting laughs with some over-the-top and quite good visual effects of blood and internal organs. Not to mention all the dramatic and horror angles this film has too. But mostly, it has tons of moments where you want to yell out loud, "That was Awesome." Martin has lost his arm due to a zombie bite, which he cut off to stop the infection (again, an 'Evil Dead 2' reference). In his escape, Herzog, the zombie nazi commander loses his arm too. After an accident, Martin wakes up in the hospital where he sees he has his arm re-attached, but unfortunately it's not his arm. It's Herzog's arm, which takes on a life of its own as it begins to attack people. The police and detectives believe that Martin is a serial killer and responsible for killing his friends from the first film. But he tells them of the zombie Nazis who were responsible for the mayhem, and much to his dismay, everyone thinks he is insane, because who would believe such nonsense besides you and I. Martin manages to escape again with the help of an American kid who tells them there is a zombie death squad in America who can help him. A phone call to the zombie death squad sets things in motion, but we quickly see that this ferocious death squad is anything but dangerous, but rather three siblings in their parent's basement, preparing for the zombie apocalypse from what they've seen in their favorite movies and TV shows. Martin Star (Freaks and Geeks) and Ingrid Haas (Scott Pilgrim) are among the squad as they actually head out to Norway to fight of the zombies.Martin meets up with some fellow zombie killers as the zombie nazi army is closing in, destroying everything in its path. But luckily for the humans, Martin's newly zombified arm summons another undead army from underground. This time it's a large army of Russians who were killed by the Nazis during WWII, and want revenge, hence the 'Red vs Dead' title. There are so many moments and scenes where you just want to join the action with these characters. It's that entertaining. And the comedy comes full force throughout the film. It's never cheesy as the filmmakers were well aware of the type of film they were making. There are some surprisingly excellent performances here and the visual effects are very good, considering the low budget this movie had. 'Dead Snow 2: Red vs Dead' is as much fun as you can have with a zombie move, and almost instantly requires another viewing right after the end credits finish.

Sometimes a movie is so absurdly fun, it can get away with almost anything, Dead Snow 2 is almost that kind of movie. The premise is ridiculous, it involves an army of Nazi zombies running amok in Norway. Focus of this movie hinges entirely of how fun the gore can be, and to its credit, with tongue-in-cheek script it's pretty enjoyable. However, there are a few segments that diminish the amusement, most notably the contrast on dark scenes.Martin had a bad experience, he's awakened Nazi zombies by taking their gold on a snowy mountain. After losing his friends and lover, he manages to escape and finds refuge. Little did he know that the Nazi zombies have a knack to invade people. The acting isn't superior, but the actors do well on producing more comical effect. Characters are few and they are introduced with over-the-top personality quite effectively. The movie knows the genre and its demography well, producing more mayhem and a dash more imagination than most zombie movies. It has good sense of humor, rather dark and a bit desensitizing, although strangely fitting for the concept. It doesn't possesses elegance not does it try to, there's barely any five minutes where blood isn't displayed gloriously. The carnage is made with practical effects, they look convincingly brutal and will please the fans of the genre. Make-up and costume department did their job well as the zombies do look unique. As far as the deaths go, Dead Snow 2 has a few creative ones. Unfortunately, there's a bit of inconsistency in plot where the characters pop-up, survive miraculously or act in very stupid manner. Admittedly, they are minor things since the movie already suspends the viewer disbelief. Its main setback is it's uncomfortably dark when it doesn't need to be. The cinematography is good at outdoor as well as in daylight, however it becomes too blurry at night scenes or those in relatively dark area, which a good portion of the movie occurs at. This inevitably dulls the experience.Dead Snow 2 confidently boasts exaggerated theme with mortifying amount of blood and self-aware humor, and despite having a few faults, it will most likely entertain fans of horror genre.

Despite being a zombie fan, it took me a couple of viewings to appreciate the original 'Dead Snow.' But it grew on me (and now I own it on DVD). I was delighted when I heard a sequel was out and watched it straight away. I have to say I didn't like this one either at first, but, whereas the original took a couple of viewings to 'get,' I started to like its sequel at around the half hour mark. The original Dead Snow was a 'condensed little number.' It was about a group of friends who took a skiing holiday to a remote cabin (hardly original, eh?) where they interrupt a load of Nazi zombies. Naturally, blood and guts follow. So, instead of retreading the original, the film-makers choose to expand the whole story on a bigger picture. We're given more information on the Nazis zombies. Who'd have thought evil undead killers have such a rich and diverse back-story?! But they do! Plus we have a whole new cast of characters on hand to help out the lone survivor of the initial encounter. And the characters are fun. The police on the trail of the undead carnage is pretty inept and quite amusing. Our leftover hero is nicely psychotic and damaged after his previous ordeal, but what makes the film is how the writers have added all sorts of nice new aspects to what could just be another zombie movie. There are so many movies out there like this these days that anything that wants to stand out has to cover new ground. And I'm glad to say this one does. I won't list too many of its original nice touches, but my favourite aspect was how the hero's arm god severed and the hospital had to reattach it. Only they messed up and accidentally stitched on the main zombie's arm, hence unwittingly giving our hero a few new powers of his own.You will need to have a pretty dark sense of humour to watch this. There are so many politically incorrect moments that break conventions. A black sense of humour is a must here. Plus there's a fair bit of action towards the end. Off the top of my head I'd have to say that 'Dead Snow2' contains the longest ongoing climactic battle I've seen in a zombie film. You should be aware that the film is shot in both Norwegian and English, so you'll find you're reading the subtitles one minute, only to realise you're listening to English the next. The only criticisms I have would be that it does feel a little 'all over the place' at times. Sometimes there are so many ideas and characters that things get a little messy and you end up pining for the 'condensed-ness' of the original. Also, the leader of the 'zombie squad' annoyed me a little bit. He seemed to start off as an uber-geek and ended up being tougher than Rambo. But those are just minor gripes. I think Part 2 is a great little number that doesn't detract from the original and has enough things in it that are new to warrant it standing out above many of the B-movie zombie films cluttering up bargain bins full of cheap DVDs you've never heard of.
