Really Surprised!
It's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.
The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
Sheitan is a French horror film that really doesn't go anywhere or provide many scary moments. Vincent Cassel is unrecognizable as the lead villain Joseph; he's sufficiently menacing but the weak script is well below his acting talents. Cassel was the dance director in last years much hyped and overrated Black Swan. Here he scowls and physically abuses most of the cast throughout this scare fest.On the positive side, Roxane Mesquida provides eye candy(as she did in the horror- parody Rubber recently). As the temptress Eve she has brought a few bar patrons to her family's rural farm for a supposed romantic getaway. Of course things don't turn out as planned for the prospective soul mates. Ms. Mesquida does have an all to brief nude scene with 2 guys. The movie only runs an hour and a half, so if you're a horror fan, this is very middle of the road with some better and some worse in this genre. The two aforementioned leads make the ride marginally passable.
Did you see some references to Kourtrajmé in this movie? Because this movie is filled with that. 1st things 1st: What is Kourtrajmé. In french slang it means "short film". Kourtrajmé is a collective of street performers whose main concern are anti racism, playing with symbols, and having fun. Incorrect fun, that is: they play on fear of unknown and violence. Their main medium is unsurprisingly short film and music clips. From now on Kourtrajmé will be written as K for short. I ll list below all the references to K I found in this movie.Kim Chapiron, director, is from K. Thai is played By Nico Le Phat. He is a director from K. Mainly for clips. Barth (Olivier Barthelemy) can be seen on many clips from Romain Gavras, also from K. Ladj (Ladj Ly) is a director from K. Responsible for a famous (in France) fake documentary about hash pushers: Gofast connexion. The initial sentence, "God, don't pity them for they know what they do" is a recurring sentence from K. They usually aim it at politician who play hate-mongers and leave suburbs grow with poverty and violence. In the opening scene, the DJ (played by Mouloud, a friend of K, as all(?) the actors) wears a K Tshirt. On his mix table is a picture of a guy missing a tooth; he is Mohamed Mazouz, AKA HiTekk from La Caution, affiliated to K.At some point, Mouloud yells "Batards de barbares". It is the name of the clip watched by Barth, Eve and Thai. Check out for the soul rewrite by Mai Lan "Je t immole gentiment" (I immolate you kindly) with the crudest/grossest lyrics ever("I dig your grandma s grave and ra*e her and if u r not happy with it I ra*e your dad too")At some point their car is blocked by a pack of goats. Then Barth takes the billy-goats goatee and starts singing "par la barbichette". It is a french kiddie song/game in which both players hold the other s chin. The first to laugh gets a slap. "La barbichette" also is another short from Kim Chapiron in which Barthelemy and Cassel use this game to determine who is gonna help mum.In fact, the all film plays with our fears of the unknown: either the gangster style of the heroes, or the creepiness/racism of countryside people. Hence, this flick explores all the clichés of these groups.you might want to see more from K. then surf kourtrajme dot com
Oh dear. I know democracy is good, is something positive even if not perfect. Nevertheless, when I see here all the shinning comments about this abnormal movie I just want to putsh over IMDb and play Pinochet for a while until all those stars are wiped out for good.Cassel, Cassel, Cassel... not even your genius, not even your brilliant performance can save this aberration. Why to take part in such a stupid project? Please, I want to know why??? I demand to know! Absolutely below all B movie standards. They probably thought "let's mix Cassel with some pretty faces and asses and with some crazy directing moves and we got ourselves a movie". Instead, what Kim Chapiron got was something to throw in the nearest trash bin. What he got was a complete failure, a mess without plot, without actors, without ideas, without consistence. What he did was to copy the traditional teen horror movie already seen ten thousand times before, arrange some fancy scenarios with lots of dolls, kidnap Bellucci until Cassel agreed to jump into the project and VOILÁ! You got yourself the bullshit movie of the year.Avoid this movie with all your strengths, even if you adore Cassel, like me.
Kicked out of Styxx nightclub in Paris, a group of young men & women head to the country for a new place to party away Christmas Eve. There, they meet a strange (VERY strange) shepherd who is setting up for a Satanic ritual to bring the devil's seed into the world (which came about from some good ol' fashioned backwoods incest).Although I would've preferred a more serious Frontière(s)-like approach to a film like this that would've resulted in a brutally serious movie, the fact that it was more of a comedy actually wasn't too bad. With as vicious as some of the more popular French horrors have been recently, a little humour can go a long way. I mean, when Vincent Cassel's character, Joseph, was asking Bart to hop on his shoulders to play Water Chicken. . . it was probably the funniest thing I've seen in a long time. Actually, anytime Joseph (in either gender) opened his mouth, it was pretty hilarious. But, unfortunately. . . he was the only thing that kept this film from being a total mess. Probably the most obvious problem I had with it was the fact that there was almost NO horror (or even thriller) action for the entire first hour or more of the film. It was mostly character development, which was unnecessary as all of the characters were pretty one-dimensional. Luckily, however, when the brief (like '20 minutes out of an hour and a half' kinda brief) chunk of horror actually begins, it is fairly violent and a little bit disgusting. But, again, it was not enough to save the film. The story was, well, strange. . . but original, at least. As the story headed towards the convoluted ending, it kind of lost it for me. Beyond that, there's nothing much else to say about this film other than. . . well, it just didn't feel worth the time to me.Final verdict: 6/10. Rather disappointing.Vive La France! -AP3-
