If you don't like this, we can't be friends.
For all the hype it got I was expecting a lot more!
It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
Now is Good is a British film about a girl who is dying. It's a familiar tale and a bit clichéd at times however as a drama it's pretty good. I found it quite realistic and pretty engrossing. The acting is pretty good especially Dakota Fanning who is excellent. Her character is strong willed and at times not altogether likable however isn't this the case for a lot of girls at this age. Paddy Considine does a good job as her dad struggling to cope with the imminent loss of his daughter. The storyline follows Fanning as she tries to pack in a wish list in the last months of her life. The list is predictable and a little depressing, which is a symptom of our times. The acting however does make up for any weaknesses in the plot. There are some emotional scenes that are handled well. Now is Good is an enjoyable if fairly predictable drama that for me thanks mainly to the acting just nudges an 8/10.
Thank goodness that very few people have to experience the terrible disease of leukaemia, either the person suffering from it or those who love those who suffer from it.SPOILER BEGINS This movie is about a young English lady, Tessa Scott (Dakota Fanning) who is dying of leukaemia and has only a short time to live. Although she does not make a bucket list there are things she wants to do before the fateful day, above all she wishes to find love. She thinks she has found it with Adam (Jeremy Irvine). Adam is a very shy young man whose main priority is caring for his sickly mother after his father died.SPOILER ENDS When we consider the cost of making movies often runs into 100s of millions of dollars it once again proves that excellent movies can be made on a shoestring budget. Now is Good only cost $500.000 to make. This movie was made in England with Dakota Fanning, a Georgia lass, playing the very English Tessa.I have to give her top marks for the way she handled the British accent and had I not known she was an American I would never have known she was not English Now is Good has not won any awards yet and I consider it unlikely that it will but I do feel it is worthy of some. The screenplay by Ol Parker from the novel by Jenny Downham was extremely sensitively written with its fair share of lighter moments which made a very good balance with the inevitable sadness of the movie.Dakota Fanning and Jeremy Irvine played their parts admirably and with true sensitivity. All the other players were more than passable in their performances and the casting was extremely well done.Ol Parker's direction was also extremely thoughtful, sensitive and professional. When a child or young person is facing death from disease, whatever it is, it is obviously terrible for them but it is equally terrible for all those around them, both before they pass on and having to live with the emptiness when their loved one is gone.
The front is quite boring but as the movie progresses it gets better. You'll have to be patient with it, but it'll pay off. If you're planning to watch, please standby some tissues, you'll need it. (REALLY) Kudos to all the actors, they did a remarkable job at portraying and delivering the emotions, especially Dakota and Jeremy, very realistic. A great movie overall, since it waaaaaaaaay better than I expected. The storyboard and dialogs was very well developed in my point of view. It's not a complete romance movie, it blends in with other themes well, like family, drama and all that but don't expect to find any comedy at all.
i'm not going to lie. i usually cry during movies, especially ones about cancer but this one really landed like a stone in the pit of my stomach. by the end of this film i had red eyes, a red nose twice its normal size and i had this ache in my chest. and i usually hate movies that can make me cry because i am proud and i never cry in front of people. but this movie is a master piece, not just because it had this effect on me but because you fall in love with every single one of the characters ; spoiler alert!!! the cancer obsessed dad, the absent mum, the passionate Tessa and a very brave young man indeed! you really never want this movie to end !
