Lack of good storyline.
As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
This movie begins with two people who work for the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) in a boat collecting water samples on Lake Placid. Suddenly, one of the men is snatched off of the boat with only bits and pieces of him remaining in the blood-stained water. The second man immediately rushes to the local constabulary, "Sheriff Riley" (John Schneider) who initially treats it as a big joke. However, when the mortician produces the remains of the body the sheriff then decides to take it a little more seriously and heads out to the lake to investigate. Also with him is the EPA official and a woman named "Emily" (Sarah Lafleur) who works for the Fish and Wildlife Department. While Sheriff Riley is investigating his teenage son, "Scott" (Chad Collins) also heads out to the lake with a young woman named "Kerri" (Alicia Ziegler) and a few of her friends who plan on camping out and having a good time. What nobody realizes is that there are several enormous crocodiles in the area who have obtained a fondness for human meat in the last 2 years and are always eager for more. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this film had good potential. Unfortunately, the low-key and nonchalant manner which the characters displayed during the entire film really affected the movie as a whole. It sometimes seemed like the director (David Flores) was trying to play a big joke on the audience but for some odd reason withheld any discernible humor or punch line. Whatever the case, the lack of seriousness took a toll and resulted in a movie that appeared to be merely going through the motions. Again, this film had potential--but it simply wasn't realized. Consequently, I rate it as slightly below average.
Upon hearing about the Sequels that followed the original Lake Placid, I wasn't sure if this would be any good! Considering that it was one of those Straight-to- DVD/TV Films. The film starts out pretty much like the first Lake Placid! 2 guys are in a boat in the middle of the lake collecting/looking for samples, aside from talking crap about this and that causing one of the to get distracted & then... A crocodile attack takes place! And the guy gets pulled under the water & gets partially chewed up! The other guy is then astonished & looks around in confusing & panic, calling his friends name out until the body of his friend lunges from the water & he tries to save him by pulling him back into the boat & a part of his body is in the hands of the guy who attempt to pull him in.etc! Etc! body count was better! They then take the body to the morgue to examine what happened & as usual the sheriffs department think the guy who witnessed the attack is crazy & just seeing things & claiming it was a bear that killed him! What the f**k!! They then go in search & still think he's crazy until they find a head of the man (slight difference) & then witness the crocodile & instantly believe him! A Group of survivalist/hunters come to help. They then make camp by the lake & work out a way to try & kill the Crocodile(s)But this time, in Lake Placid 2! There's 3 crocodiles!!!To say the least, I liked this film abit better than the first, because it had more bloody effects in it (not really gory but good enough!) as well as a higher body count! Which if I'm not mistaken was 8 people! Unlike the first which only had a body count of 2!The CGI effects though were abit crap! You could instantly tell the crocodiles weren't real & didn't blend in very well! The water plane was the worst & possibly the best example of the CGI being cheap & tacky! I've seen better effects in a cheap 90's Horror Film! Although it didn't so much mind the CGI blood I felt that was OK! But the plane was just incredibly fake! Even a 5-Year- Old could tell it wasn't real! The Crocodiles were OK but didn't have a realistic effect as the original did!The kills were OK not the best but OK for a sequel like this one! The usual kills when the 2 girls get killed by the crocodile & the guy runs in foolishly shouting "Whose there!" & gets eaten! Seen it all before! Bit of a typical horror cliché! I liked how Mrs. Bickerman got what she deserved after she attempted to kill Kerri on the pier! (Creepy Old B*st*rd!)The typical teen-adults were typical as you'd see in any horror film! Stripping on the lake, skinny dipping, drinking beer etc! Etc!The ending was pretty good! The sheriff got together with Emily Warner & Scott who liked Kerri got together with her!Overall I'm giving this a 9/10 for higher body count & more bloodier effects! Through I think the CGI effects were abit crap!
Within the creatures-on-the-loose genre exists the sub-category of crocogator flicks. Believe it or not, 2007's "Lake Placid 2" is one of the better entries in this genre. In my opinion it's more entertaining than the original 1999 film, which is hard to believe since this sequel went straight-to-DVD with a much lower budget (a mere $2 million compared to $27 million). Other than the budget and the cast "Lake Placid 2" is superior in practically every way: Although both films have a were-not-taking-this-too-seriously vibe, similar to "Crocodile" (2000) and "Alligator" (1980), "Lake Placid 2" is a little more serious than the original, which scores points in my book (but, don't get me wrong, there are quite a few funny and campy parts, like the incredibly casual way the Ranger responds toward people who have just perished). The babes are both more numerous and hotter. One good example is Sarah Lafleur (Emma) and her dive into the water early in the picture. Then you have Rachel and her white bikini (VJ Kewl, aka VJ Benson), stunning blond Edi (Zhasmina Toskova) and, lastly, the secondary protagonist, Kerri (Alicia Ziegler). The Bulgarian locations are superior to British Columbia. Not that B.C. isn't gorgeous but the story takes place in New England and Bulgaria is simply a better stand-in for Maine. (If you're not sure where Bulgaria is, it's located in Southeastern Europe by the Black Sea).Although the cgi crocs may not look as good as the first film, the kills are better, if you're into that sort of thing. The story, which is very similar to the original, is all-around better for what it is (a Grade-B nature-runs-amok flick). Although the cast may not be as A-list as the first film, they came up with a good group of people led by John Schneider and all have fine chemistry together; they obviously had a fun time making this picture. John is a excellent leading man and perfect for these types of films. Some, of course, mock him because he played Bo Duke on The Dukes of Hazzard, but so what? How does that detract from his performance in this film or others of the same ilk, like "Ogre"? He's an actor/entertainer and perfectly capable of playing different roles. Incidentally, he was in his late forties during filming and still looks great -- does the man ever age?! Other highlights include Sarah Lafleur's face and hair; she's so uniquely cute it's somehow enjoyable to just look at her. Also, there are some really laugh-out-loud moments, like the ranger's comment near the end regarding the recurring white bunny, as well as a certain quasi-villain (Sam McMurray) whom I was just starting to really like, and then... well, I can't give it away. Other cast members not mentioned yet include Chad Michael Collins as Scott, Joe Holt as Ahmad and Cloris Leachman as Sadie, the old woman who regards the crocs as her "kids." There's not much else to say. If you're in the mood for a crocogator flick you can't go wrong with "Lake Placid 2". Yes, it's a low budget, direct-to-DVD release but it's quite entertaining for what it is and compares well with the other films of the genre. Don't give heed to the grumps who rate it so lowly; they're wrong. It's almost on par with "Crocodile" and "Alligator" and in many ways better than the original "Lake Placid."The movie runs 88 minutes. GRADE: B-
I am absolutely stunned that this "movie" actually made it to completion. You would have thought that somebody would have had the common sense to cease production early on,just for humanitarian reasons. I think I may be permanently scarred for the 60 minutes or so that I can never get back. I actually lost some brain cells by watching this. Awful acting by everybody, even the dog. Awful special effects - middle school quality. Awful dialog - grade school quality. This movie is truly as bad as you can get. The bottom of the barrel. I never thought ANY movie could come close to the horrific drivel in Showgirls but I was wrong. People, this movie is as bad as it gets. Everybody associated with this garbage should be shot. If you haven't watched this movie, don't even consider it. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
