Simply A Masterpiece
Great Film overall
The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
I am assuming that this pile of dross was intended to go straight to the less discerning DVD market. It is exploitative, cliché-ridden, badly acted, badly scripted and the aforementioned monks are the only sympathetic characters in the entire film (with the exception of a couple of dogs on a refuse tip which turn in a very creditable debut performance). The only exploitation I witnessed was the depiction of Thailand as an immoral, flea ridden pit full of murderers, gangs and whore-mongers. I'm sure the Thai tourist board will pass on their thanks - though it's hardly an original depiction.Kevin Bacon. It has to be said that his credibility has been gradually slipping down the toilet - and in this he continues his downward descent. Most extraordinarily in a faux Australian- British-'Gawd bliss ya Meery Poppns' Dick van Dyke accent. At first, I had assumed his voice had been dubbed, I wish it had been. The violence is comic strip, video console style - this serves to further detach the viewer from any empathy to the characters or interest in proceedings.A local girl crops up regularly. Not sure why. All in all, think how far you could have got with the decorating in one and a half hours.
STAR RATING: ***** Saturday Night **** Friday Night *** Friday Morning ** Sunday Night * Monday Morning Curtie Church (Djimon Hounsou) is a professional hit-man who's been assigned to track down the daughter of a Thai businessman who's got caught up with a group of white slave traders. When he finds she's been killed, it turns into a revenge assignment, for which he enlists the help of Jimmy 'The Brit' (Kevin Bacon, with a surprising and quite good English accent) with his cavalcade of weapons, as well as the unwanted assistance of Mae (Jirantinin Pitakporntrakul) a young girl he rescued from the villains. But as events roll on, he finds he can actually trust nobody.Released straight to DVD under a cloud of hot air, Elephant White could well mark the downfall of selective Hollywood actor Kevin Bacon, whose Brit accent is the most impressive thing about this whole farrago, which should really say it all. It's certainly not his performance, or anyone elses, each matching the bland writing on offer. The film seems to be aiming at some kind of social conscience, highlighting the plight of teenage prostitution on the streets of Bangkok, but this is made to look as hollow as it is, in light of the apathetic, piecemeal story and inconsistent action, the main thing you're watching it for. Quite a mess. *
Very very unfair reviews. Kevin Bacon made a super job of the accent. Just because you're not used to seeing him do an English accent does not mean it is bad. Actually it was quite good. Overall the acting was good and the action scenes where good. The story line was good and the ending was good. What more do you want! Blood? For people who visit Bangkok or knows anything about day to day life in Thailand it adds entertainment for sure. Amalgamating Asian casts for western audiences is probably the hardest exercise in the film industry until we get another Bruce Lee. This film is not about martial arts at all, contrary to many posts here. The last film that tried this Bangkok dangerous failed miserably and I can assure you this film comes to the rescue in that department. Overall entertaining and well put together.
I usually am not so picky with movies I see, I am not a harsh critic normally. But, this movie Elephant White has to be one of the WORST movies I have seen in my life. It was so embarrassingly AWFUL. How can Kevin Bacon do a movie like this!! First, the movie made ZERO sense, the plot was terrible. And Kevin Bacon had this terrible British accent...I cant believe 2 great actors would agree to do a movie like this.....what a joke and an insult to Hollywood....I don't even know if they got paid for this movie, but if they did it would be a disgrace...What a waste, really if you see it you will think it is a joke! I would give it a 0 out of 100. It was simply that BAD!
