i must have seen a different film!!
Absolutely the worst movie.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
On the surface this is your typical quirky comedy about a dysfunctional family combined with a chick flick. The film opens with a young Imogene (Sydney Lucas) wanting to change the most famous line from "The Wizard of Oz." After all who would want to go to Kansas once you have been in Oz. The film smartly copies the theme and to some extent, the characters of the famous film.Imogene (Kristen Wiig/Dorothy) is forced to go back home from NYC (Oz) to her family home in Ocean City, N.J. Her mother (Annette Bening/ Glenda) is over the top and lives with a younger man, George the Boushe (Matt Dillon/ Cowardly Lion) who claims he is CIA and has been a Samurai for 25 years, but seems more like a con artist. Her seeming half-wit brother Ralph (Christopher Fitzgerald/ Scarecrow) likes crabs and creates an infinite stream of metaphors about homes and protection. Imogene has discovered her room has been rented out to Lee (Darren Criss/ Tin Man) a man who is deeper than what is seen on the surface.Imogene's goal is to return to Oz and find the Wizard (Bob Balaban). This is not a great comedy by any means. It is just a simple heart warming story and chick flick that was smartly written by Michelle Morgan. I loved it, even if no one else did. Good Date night film.Parental Guide: 1 written F-bomb subscript supposedly spoken in Chinese. No nudity. Implied sex.
Absolutely hilarious! I'm amazed that this film didn't get more recognition, it has the same sense of humour as Bridesmaids and is really feel-good. It is the same sort of film as Bridesmaids but Kristen Wiig is good as ever and we really enjoyed watching it. I wouldn't say its quite as good as Bridesmaids but if you're looking for something similar then this is a great watch. Absolutely hilarious! Imogene (Kristen Wiig) is a failing writer with a dysfunctional family. She can't write anything good. She loses her job. And her boyfriend dumps her. What else can she do but to fake a suicide and call her boyfriend to rescue her? The problem is he never comes, and she gets put into the psych ward for the suicide attempt. Her irresponsible mother (Annette Bening) is put in charge of her for 72 hours. She is plunged back into her dysfunctional family and a secret is revealed.Imogene is not a fun character, and does way too many stupid things. It's kind of funny sometimes like trying to run away in the hospital. But other times, it's just stupid like stealing the library book. There is a couple of funny moments, but Imogene is too self destructive. It is a limited comedy with limited laughs. I love Kristen Wiig, but this is not a funny comedy. There are a lot of crazy characters in wacky situations, but it never gets hilarious.
While I thought the script was funny and the acting solid, I always get hung up on screenwriter's lack of fact checking. When Wiig gets placed under involuntary psych. care, they call it a "5150" - That term is only used in L.A. - not in NY or NJ!!! I realize most screenwriters are based in L.A. (including this one) but can't they do some basic fact-checking before you write the final script? It seems lazy not to and it makes me lose interest in the film as a whole once I see these types of glaring errors. I know this isn't a serious dramatic film on psych disorders but it isn't the no-budget junior high school production of Oklahoma either.
