Sorry, this movie sucks
It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.
It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...
One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.
MORE REVIEWS AT booksequalhappiness.blogspot.comI really loved this movie when I was young because it was funny but now that I rewatched it, I realized how mean it was. I now have a love-hate relationship with it because it's really funny because of the old woman but it was super devastating for the couple. It's probably best to not overanalyze things in order to enjoy it.
Yet another Hollywood production that tries to capitalize on previous hits. This burner is the "Throw Momma From The Train" from hell installment. It's not funny. It's alarmingly predictable.Stiller is his usual mediocre performer.Drew is totally wasted. While Essell is, admittedly, spot on.This film is the opposite of Gestalt: The whole is most definitely less than the sum of its parts.
April 2010 was the month where I decided to look back at movies I have already watched, and maybe rent them so I can catch the full experience.....again. Surprisingly I came across Duplex and I quickly thought about the fun I had during this movie so I rented it. Ben Stiller is portraying Alex Rose and Drew Barrymore is portraying Nancy Kendricks, both whom are married and live with an old lady from hell that make their lives not livable. Ben Stiller has the best role in this film because his role, Alex Rose, is nothing but funny and at times you can die laughing. He is the most funniest person in this film and people who are saying that the old lady is funnier than him, well my answer to them is WRONG! Drew Barrymore is in her first "funny" role ever and in this film she mostly succeeds with her so called comical genius. She and Ben stiller are probably one of the funniest pair in film mainly because they share the same enemy: Mrs. Connelly, played by Eileen Essell. At the beginning of the film as you are introduced to Mrs. Connelly, you'll think what can this old sweet fart do? Can she even hurt a fly? Well, as the movie progresses you will probably think of ways to kill that sweet little devil for reasons which will drive your mind crazy. The reason why she can't make me laugh is that she is too old and serious. Eileen Essell would've had a bad time dealing with herself on the set of Duplex. At times you feel sympathy for the two couples who are constantly being annoyed by the old lady and funnily, you develop that sympathy for the old lady. The film's plot is silly and old people should not take offense just because their kind is being exterminated. Danny Devito has done a good job of making this dark and funny film which he only could create. I was actually surprised that he has directed the film because wouldn't he be too short to direct it.Alex Rose and Nancy Kendricks are a young, professional, New York couple in search of their dream home. When they finally find the perfect Brooklyn brownstone they are giddy with anticipation. The duplex is a dream come true, complete with multiple fireplaces, except for one thing: Mrs. Connelly, the cranky old lady who lives on the rent-controlled top floor. Assuming she is elderly and ill, they take the apartment but their hopes are quickly dashed when they realize that Mrs. Connelly is an energetic senior who enjoys watching her television at top volume day in and day out and rehearsing in a brass band. A writer, Alex is attempting to finish his novel against a looming deadline. However, each day as he begins to write, he is interrupted by Mrs. Connelly's numerous demands and requests and what begins as a nuisance quickly escalates into an all-out war. When Nancy loses her job and the pair are trapped at home together with Mrs. Connelly, their rage turns to homicidal fantasy as they plot ways to get rid of their no-good neighbor...If you think this film will be sweet look at what they do to the old lady as the couple hire hit men to assassinate the old lady, buy a gun and plan to shoot her themselves, they even fantasize about killing by kicking her down the stairs, throwing her into a river, bulging her eyes out, etc. The film will appeal to audiences young and alike and everyone will have a good time watching an old lady annoying a couple. P.s. The ending was "WTF!" P.P.s To read more reviews, Star Trek, me myself and Irene, etc, click my name. 6.5/10 - Laugh out loud funny.
this film is hilarious. Sure, there are comedy mechanisms at work here...........DER! IT'S A COMEDY! the surehanded direction is seamless and uninvasive and the cast perform realistically which serves to make the humour more effective. I laughed aloud all through the movie, genuinely. Stiller is a comedy master and Drew Barrymore revealed herself to be one also. This is a film made and played by masters at the peak of their game and a total entertainment.........I think this is what movies are for. One can intellectualise in a Godardian manner about the purpose of 'Le' Cinema.....but for the most of us, we pay for our seat and are thoroughly entertained and amused........isn't that why we leave the house on a Friday night to go to the Mall? I rate this movie. It sits well with 'Throw Momma From The Train' and, to some extent, The Ladykillers. More of this type of film please. The importance of the therapy of laughter is not to be underestimated and the balance between 'black' or dark humour and light-hearted slapstick is achieved to perfection. We need the exorcism of hatred through comedy to make the break between our daily weekday worklives and the week-end. With this movie we get it all. Great moments? well, the sexy nurse making eye contact with Mr Stiller - whilst adjusting his manhood beneath the covers - accompanied by Marvin Gaye's 'Sexual Healing' is hilarious.
